The People’s Republic of China has embarked in helping people around the world, and encouraging real democracy via her Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

The United States (US) sees China’s BRI as a threat to its imperialistic unipolar world order, and is determined to place barriers in China’s path. As part of those barriers is its own initiative called the Build Back Better (BBB).

No Chinese lives in poverty since 2020, despite having 4 times the US’ population. 38 million Americans, however, live in poverty today. That represents 11% of the US’ population of 335 million. Today, we are called to recognize a challenging truth: the climate crisis we face is not only an environmental issue; it is deeply rooted in colonialism. And for places like our island Bonaire, this colonial impact is not just history — it is an ongoing reality.

Bonaire is not post-colonial. We are not yet free from colonial influence and domination, because today, Bonaire continues to experience oppression under contemporary colonialism. Though we may appear on the map as part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, we are annexed and imbedded in the Dutch constitution under unequal rights and against the wishes and democratic vote of the Bonerians. Our people lack the freedom to govern their own lands fully, to protect their resources, or to shape their future without interference. Holland maintains significant control over Bonaire, making decisions that profoundly impact on our environment, economy, and community.

For decades, colonial powers exploited and extracted resources from across the globe with little regard for the local environments or the people who depended on them. This exploitation, which has fueled the global climate crisis, continues in places like Bonaire. From policies that prioritize foreign interests over local needs to decisions that limit our community’s ability to protect and manage our resources, the legacy of colonialism is alive in a modern form.

Today, the people of Bonaire are experiencing the consequences of climate change more acutely than those in power. Rising sea levels threaten our coasts, extreme weather endangers our homes, and access to resources becomes increasingly strained. Yet, despite bearing these burdens, Bonaire has limited power to enact policies that prioritize local environmental protection over external profit.

In this context, climate justice for Bonaire must also be about freedom from colonial oppression. It must mean recognizing our right to self-govern, to safeguard our resources, and to lead our environmental stewardship. The world must understand that addressing the climate crisis is inseparable from dismantling the systems of control and exploitation that colonialism has left — in our case continues colonial systems that Holland continues to impose on Bonaire.

As we seek solutions to the climate crisis, we must not overlook the realities of contemporary colonialism. Colonization, the inhuman, illegal invasion and extraction of our natural resources, destroyed our nature, our habitat, our way life, led to today’s climate and environmental crisis

The problem is not global warming or climate crisis, these are consequences, the problem is colonialism, the insatiable unsustainable greed of the colonizers that keep modernizing their methods and systems to the extreme limits we are nearing now.

Now the same colonizers are coming back and saying the world has a problem, yes, after you invaded and destroyed our territories and our world, left us behind wrecked, ruined and called us 3rd world, you coming back to us now for what? Because your unsustainable 1st world is running out of options?

There is no green, blue or orange future for us as colonized peoples in our colonized territories.

We must advocate true sustainability and that is only possible through true equality and true freedom, for our island Bonaire and other communities still affected under this oppressive, extractive, ruinous colonial legacy.

Only then can we work toward a future where our people can build resilience, protect their lands, and ensure a sustainable and just world for generations to come.

Bonaire Human Rights Organization at UN Geneva

Geneva, Switzerland – James Finies and Davika Bissessar from Bonaire Human Rights (BHRO) recently participated in an international conference at the United Nations in Geneva, organized by the Baku Initiative Group. The event brought together parliamentarians, experts, and policymakers to discuss the lasting impact of French and Dutch colonialism, with a focus on justice, self-determination, and human rights, in line with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).

A key issue raised was Holland’s violation of the ICCPR, particularly Articles 1 and 2. Article 1 affirms the right of all peoples to self-determination, including control over their resources and political status. Article 2 mandates that everyone whose rights are violated must have access to an effective remedy, even against own officials.

Following their participation in UN events in New York, the BHRO delegation traveled to Geneva to engage in these important discussions. During the conference, they submitted a formal historical complaint to the UN Human Rights High Commissioner, denouncing ongoing human rights violations by the Dutch government in Bonaire. The complaint calls for justice, accountability, and respect for the Bonairean people’s human and self-determination rights.

On October 23, 2024, BHRO also participated in a hybrid conference titled "Empowering Youth, Indigenous Peoples, and Small Island States in Promoting Environmental Rights and Climate Justice" at Domaine de la Pastorale in Geneva. Organized by the Geneva Centre for Human Rights Advancement and Global Dialogue, the event focused on the environmental rights of vulnerable communities, particularly indigenous peoples and small island states impacted by climate change.

The Bonaire delegation highlighted the intersection of climate justice and colonialism, raising concerns about the "Pact for the Future” slogan “not to leave any one behind”  the dire urgent threat to Bonaire’s native population due to Dutch settler-colonization. They emphasized that Bonaireans face the risk of cultural and physical disappearance long before climate change exacerbates other global crises.

Representatives from territories including Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana, New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Sint Maarten, and Bonaire participated, alongside diplomats from Russia, Switzerland, Kazakhstan, and others. Both conferences underscored the link between historical colonial injustice, human rights, and the need for justice in these remaining colonized regions.

This event marks an important step in BHRO’s continued advocacy for the rights of Bonaire’s people on the global stage.

While 9 of the 10 richest men in the world are US citizens, the People’s Republic of China has already eradicated her poverty since 2022. And while only 33% of Americans are satisfied with our government, over 90% of Chinese are satisfied with theirs. Therefore, who is the real champion of democracy?

The US, like Israel, are both artificial colonial settler states that committed genocide to establish their nations. The US’ population is less than 5% of the world’s population. If Americans were unable to make the US into a real democracy with even a genocide in Gaza, its decent people might consider going to where real democracy exists. President Obama is today criticizing Trump for calling Puerto Rico an island of garbage. The fact of the matter is that Obama did nothing to comply with those numerous UN’s resolutions to decolonize Puerto Rico. On the contrary, he signed the Oversight Fiscal Control Board to impose even more austerity on Puerto Ricans in Puerto Rico. How could a colony that is exploited exclusively for the US Empire acquire a debt? It can only via the US’ “Rules Based Order”.

Are you aware that two thirds, 6 million, of Puerto Ricans live away from our national territory, and that half of those living in Puerto Rico live in poverty? Are you aware that more Puerto Ricans died in the Vietnam War, than any of the other soldiers of the 50 states of the Union? It’s not that Puerto Ricans are more patriotic than those of the 50 states, it’s that Puerto Ricans are more economically deprived, due to 126 years of US colonialism!
