Puerto Rico plebiscite: a trap to maintain the status quo

PUERTO RICO: Plebiscito trampa para mantener la colonia « Ruinas Digitales – Portal sobre medios de comunicación peronistas de la década del 70.

This is not a recent essay, but it does, however, express the fundamental problem with the use of a plebiscite to decolonize a colony.

The colony needs to be able to decide for herself what destiny she wants to persue.  That would be  imposible to occur as long as it is occupied by the imperial power.

The imperial power must turn over total control to the colony, free all her political prisoners, and leave the colony along with its repressive operations.  Anything short of this, as the title suggests, is a trap!

We look forward to meeting you on June 2012!

New Puerto Rican Political Party advocates Plebiscite Boycott

MUS llama a boicot masivo de plebiscitos del PNP y PPD por WPAB Ponce - YouTube

The “Movimiento Unión Soberanistas (MUS)” classifies the 2012 Puerto Rico Political Status Plebiscite as a total waste of time, an insult to the Puerto Rican People, and a terrible waste of money (12 million).  It will never yield any real positive result to the question of Puerto Rico decolonization.

We welcome the MUS to join us at the June 2012 United Nations Puerto Rico Decolonization Hearing to protest this deception.  Only with a united front that includes everyone who demands the decolonization of PR can we force decolonization to be done the right way.  According to international law, it is our right!

Can we count on you too?

The White House's plan to keep Puerto Rico a colony

This report:

  • Recommends a two-part plebiscite process for Puerto Rico decolonization where the United States (US) and not the United Nations (UN) is involved in the process.  This means that the US rejects the international community’s claim that colonialism is an international affair and that it can not be a domestic one.

  • Recommends that only the residents of Puerto Rico should determine the future political status of Puerto Rico.  It totally ignores the fact that the reason over 4.1 million Puerto Ricans live outside Puerto Rico is largely the result of 113 years of US colonial rule.  Is it a wonder that Puerto Rico residents have a per capita income of one-third of that of US mainland residents?  Colonies are for the benefit of the motherland, and everybody knows that!  So colonialism forced Puerto Ricans out, and now they can’t decide Puerto Rico’s political future.  This is an attempt to get what the US wants, and not have what the Puerto Rican people want.  And this is why, instead of having the UN handle the decolonization process, the US wants to do it.

And that’s why we need to be at the June 2012 UN Puerto Rico Decolonization Hearing.  We look forward to meeting you!

These two former governors of different political status options for Puerto Rico (PR) oppose Governor Fortuño’s 2012 political status plebiscite.  They are both lawyers.  Interestingly, they both oppose the plebiscite for the wrong reasons!

Former Estado Libre Asociado de PR (status quo) governor, don Rafael, believes that President Obama really wants to resolves PR’s colonial relationship with the United States (US).  All US presidents have said exactly that, but, by their own actions (including President Obama), they have proven that it was all “lip service”.  Don Rafael proposes that PR should work with the President and the Congress to legislate a self-executing law for the decolonization of PR.  Obviously, he is not a student of Puerto Rican history!

Former Partido Nuevo Progresista governor, don Carlos, on the other hand, proposes that the question that should be posed to the residents of PR be the same question that he himself asked President Obama.  President Obama, according to don Carlos, refused to answer his question twice.  “Do you want American citizenship with all of the rights and obligations that comes along with it?”

Both are content with having the same country that owns the colony to also control the process of PR decolonization.  As lawyers and former legislators, haven’t they heard understood the popular Puerto Rican saying, “El que hace la ley hace la trampa”?

We are looking forward to meeting you this June 2012!

Shouldn’t lawyers know who has jurisdiction for decolonization?

Fortuño ¡El Plebiscito Va Puerto Rico! El Status "Causa de Nuestros Males" - YouTube

This video will show you the present governor of Puerto Rico (PR) supporting his government's intention to ask the residents of PR if they want to remain a territory (colony).

The governor, who is a lawyer, must know that colonialism is illegal under international law.  The government asking, "Do you want to be a slave?" would be also equally as unlawful!

This is why decolonization is left to an international organization, and not to the country that holds a colony.

We agree that Puerto Rico must be decolonized, but the governor's way will never make it happen!

We look forward to meeting you on June 2012!
