This is state terrorism against Puerto Rico!

These are family members of those massacred on March 21, 1937.  You can see the bullet holes on the wall above their heads.

March 21 was the anniversary of what the American Civil Liberties Union called, “The Ponce Massacre” in its report following the investigation concerning this historic event.  The government tried to justify the massacre by making it look like the police only defended themselves from the Nationalists.  But the truth came out.

The police, by orders of the colonial chief of police, fired to kill defenseless demonstrators and innocent by-standers.  The United States government did not want any protest to the jailing of the Puerto Rico Nationalist Party leaders.  The massacre resulted in 21 deaths (including two police by their own crossfire) and about 150 wounded on that Easter Sunday in 1937.

On July 25, 1978, the police again carried out a plan to assassinate two men who advocated independence for Puerto Rico.  They were lured by the police to a mountaintop where the killings occurred.  The police alleged that the men were killed in self-defense.  A senate investigation, however, revealed that they were in fact killed cold-bloodedly by police as they pleaded for their lives.

The most recent act of state terrorism was the assassination of Filiberto Ojeda Ríos by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).  On the very day when Puerto Ricans who favor independence celebrated an uprising during Spanish colonialism called, “El Grito de Lares,” FBI agents shot and allow Ojeda Ríos – a  fugitive and independence advocate -to bleed to death at his home in Hormigueros, Puerto Rico.  The FBI could have arrested him at any time.  But, it chose rather to have a confrontation with him, so that he could be assassinated precisely on this meaningful day for the Puerto Ricans who want independence for their homeland (September 23, 2005).  Then the US has the audacity to publicly say that she is willing to support any decision PR makes with regards to her final political status.  Is there anyone who believes that?

With a history like this, who could believe that decolonization could ever be possible through a process whereby the United States (US) has control over?  This is precisely why we study history.  Obviously, the answer is a definite no!

Therefore, the best way for a serious Puerto Rico (PR) decolonization is by protesting the hypocrisy of democracy in a colony by way of a PR elections boycott, followed by a decolonization process via the United Nations.  But for that, Puerto Ricans must learn our history so that we don’t continue making the same mistakes over and over again!  That reminds me of what my history teacher used to say: “Those who don’t remember the past are condemned to relive it.”  Do we dare to remember?  And if we can’t, terrorism has worked brilliantly!

If Puerto Rico’s political status is so good, why are the smartest people leaving?

Puerto Rico losing professionals to U.S. states – USATODAY.com

Here is a recent article about Puerto Rico (PR)’s huge brain exodus.  The article only briefly hints at the underlying cause for this in its reference to “PR’s complex relationship with the United States”.  In keeping with the United Nation’s recent call to speak honestly, so that decolonization could be achieved in this third decade dedicated to it, I will explain what that author meant by that.

PR is a colony of the United State by virtue of a military invasion 114 years ago.  A failed revolt for independence in 1950 prompted the US to allow in 1952 the creation of the government we have today.  A year later, the US asked the United Nations (UN) to remove PR from its list of colonies with the pretext that the new government constituted self-government.  The UN consented.  Since then, the UN has acknowledged that PR always remained a colony, and continues to celebrate annual hearings to discuss the decolonization of PR.  Incredibly, the UN has never returned PR back on the list of colonies.  Presently, there are 16 colonies listed (each with small populations).  PR, the oldest and most populated, is still absent the list!

As you could see, the relationship is only complex for PR.  But that’s to be expected since the US created it that way.  The US gets all the benefits including all of the workers she needs, while PR is left with inferior quality services, or not enough professionals for our needs.

The article mentions the high crime level in PR.  This, obviously, is indicative of the desperation the island is in.

This scenario could be completed turned around if PR were to be governed for the benefit of Puerto Ricans.  But that could only happen when PR is decolonized.  Until then, she will continue to be exploited as she has been since the island was first colonized by Spain over 5 centuries ago.  How much worst must it get before Puerto Rican try something novel to change our tragic historical course?

We propose a boycott of the PR elections, and her decolonization via the United Nations (UN).

Like the UN website motto says, “It’s your world!”   You decide!

2012 Decolonization Committee goes back to work

Special Committee on Decolonization Can Evolve ‘Innovative Approaches, Generate New Dynamics’, Says Secretary-General in Message to Organizational Meeting

Recently, the United Nation’s Special Committee for the eradication of worldwide colonialism began its 2012 work session.

The Secretary General asked the Committee:

  • Work together and honestly with all of the parties (the colonized people and the empires)

  • Find creative strategies to achieve decolonization

  • Involve as many people as possible in the process, so that it could be achieved soon

We totally agree with the Secretary General and the new Chairman of the Committee, Mr. Diego Morejón Pazmino.

We hope that we will be able to achieve our goal this year, if that is God’s will!

Repression and propaganda have worked wonders in Puerto Rico!

The deceitfully named “Commonwealth of Puerto Rico” was created by Law 600 of the government that invaded Puerto Rico.  It excluded independence for Puerto Rico (PR) which is guaranteed under International Law for all colonies.  Two years earlier, the Puerto Rican Nationalists revolted to try to obtain exactly that.  The United States Congress forced PR to alter its “Constitution” after it was written.  And that’s how we got our present government in PR.  Where is the democracy?

The following year, the United States (US) asked the United Nations (UN) to remove PR from its list of colonies, because, she argued, this new political status represented self government.  This was, and still is, a lie.  And this is what some people call the democracy that we have in PR.

In order to sell this lie, words had to be redefined.  This is why in PR everything is done backwards.  Mr. Santos Hernández recently wrote a very interesting article about this subject called, “El País de las “Redefiniciones” (The Country of Redefinitions).  It is in the Spanish version of this blog above.

The repression during these 114 years of US colonialism (Massacre de Ponce, Ley de La Mordaza, Cerro Maravilla, The Assassination of Feliberto Ojeda Rios, 31 years of imprisonment for Oscar Lopez Rivera, etc.) along with the use of this propaganda, has worked wonders in PR.  So much so, that PR has an 80% participation in these PR masquerade elections sanctioned by the invading government.  And for the icing on the cake, PR’s election participation is 20% higher than in the US!

As long as 80% of us continue fighting amongst ourselves while we ignore our own history, we will continue to live in this chaos!  The majority of our Puerto Rican politicians want us to continue to do so, so that they could continue to enjoy the life of luxury for administrating the colony for the US.  All this is possible, because the Puerto Ricans are oblivious to this deception!

Participation in these colonial elections gives credibility to something that is illegal to International Law, and designed to keep us a colony forever.  It is impossible for these elections to solve our problems, because our problem is that we are a colony of the country that is permitting them.  That is why US illegally excluded independence from our choice in 1952 even though she knew we had an exclusively right to it!  The mess, my dear Puerto Ricans, is our present form of government!

This is why the US does not want to allow the UN to manage the decolonization of PR.  How is it that the US President who received the Nobel Peace Prize is willing to continue with a condition that the international community regards as a threat to world peace?

In the meantime, we must continue the resistance.  Resistance is not terrorism.  Terrorism is what has been done to the People of Puerto Rico!

We hope to see you at the UN this June 2012.
