“I will support whatever decision the people of Porto Rico make” es lo que dice cada presidente norteamericano.

¡Muchas Gracias!

Good Morning!

My name is José Manuel López Sierra, a recently retired teacher, and an eternal history student of the oldest colony in the world, Puerto Rico (PR).

I watched last year’s hearing on the United Nation (UN)’s webcast, because it is not broadcast on PR Television.  I decided to write a blog named Compañeros Unidos para la Descolonización de Puerto Rico.   Its purpose is to educate and involve the world in this subject.  The blog has received over 3,400 visitors from around the world.  The majority has been from the empire herself.

The motivation for the blog was the poor attendance at the hearing.  Colonialism should be repugnant to democracy!  Where were we?

We need to publicize and broadcast this hearing on radio and television all over the world.  This would generate the international solidarity critically needed to get the United States (US) to decolonize.  I’ve been promoting this hearing worldwide for the last 9 months.

A colony is obtained for the sole benefit of an empire.  The motivation is exploitation, which is why she is obtained by force.  Colonialism is incompatible to the concepts of equality among people or justice for all.  An empire will keep her colony until she is forced to free her.  This is what history tells us!

During our history, the US has used terrorism to perpetuate her control.  The Ponce Massacre of 1937 and the more recent assassination of Filiberto Ojeda Rios in 2005 are excellent examples.  A current great example is the US government’s insistence of keeping incarcerated for over 31 years our partner and political prisoner Oscar López Rivera.  The message is clear.  “If you want decolonization, the same will happen to you!”  The “speak softly and carry a big stick” policy continues!

Decolonization is under international jurisdiction.  Most Puerto Ricans don’t know that.  The US has successfully convinced Puerto Ricans that it is domestic, so that she could control political outcomes.  That, however, would be like asking slave owners to free their own slaves!

We must decolonize via the UN.  To continue the fallacy that it could be done using US laws would be condemning Puerto Ricans to colonialism forever.  The empire would obviously continue to divide us through her absolute power.  What motivation does she have to decolonize?  Wasn’t it she who entered into this relationship by forced in the first place?

The fact that PR has a lot of political parties proves that we have believed the jurisdiction lie.  Why would we need even one party?  The only thing that we achieve with every new party is divide us even more!  “I will support any decision that the Porto Rican people make” is what every US president says.  Who does that benefit?

We have to put PR back on the UN list of colonies.  To continue to keep her off only helps to hide this crime!  Furthermore, problems are never solved with lies.   What justification is there to leave out the most populated and oldest colony in the world?  We must call things by their names if we want to be part of the solution, and not convert ourselves into part of the problem.

We are the only ones who have the right to self-determination and independence.  We need to talk amongst ourselves to decide what we want, without any outside influence and interference.  No one who really believes in democracy should fear this ponderous deliberation.  PR should be, and must be, what the majority of Puerto Ricans, both here and abroad, want her to be.  Those who have a problem with this don’t believe in democracy!

We must admit that we have helped colonialism.  We have permitted to be lied to about the domestic jurisdiction, and we have helped deceive the world that we are a democracy every time we erroneously participate in PR elections and plebiscites.  How is it possible to be a democracy and a colony at the same time?  That is not “the best of both worlds!”  That is lunacy!

Is the UN ready for this historic challenge?  She can not support democratic processes around the world if she herself does not have the tools to do so.  She will need to be able enforce approved resolutions.  If not, injustice will continue to threaten world peace, and our very reason for being.

Thank you for this opportunity, and I offer you my collaboration in eradicating this crime against humanity.  I am convinced, as Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is that we will need everyone’s involvement to get the job done, as we did in Nuremberg after World War II.  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. expressed eloquently what should be our North Star, when he said:  “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

Thank you!

Why isn’t the Puerto Rico Decolonization Hearing broadcast in Puerto Rico?

The United Nations (UN) is in its third decade trying to decolonize the last 17 remaining colonies.  Puerto Rico is the oldest and most populated colony with close to 4 million people!

In 1960, the UN determined that colonialism is a threat to world peace, and therefore declared it a crime against humanity!

The UN’s Special Committee for Decolonization is responsible for working towards a colony-free world.  To that end, it holds an annual hearing to discuss the Puerto Rico case.  This year it will be on June 18th 2012.  Most people are oblivious to this!  Why?

I have never seen these hearings broadcast on Puerto Rican television in all of my 32 years living here!  I haven’t because they are not broadcast by the Puerto Rican TV stations.  You would expect that the government run WIPR-TV would, but it does not either.  Here is another example of PR being run backwards for Puerto Ricans!  So the logical question is why isn’t this hearing at the UN about Puerto Rico blacked-out in Puerto Rico?

This is the best example to show that the PR government works for the interest of the United States (US) and itself, and not for the people of PR.  This is how and why PR has been a colony of the US for 114 years.  Here is another way.

In 1953, the US asked the UN to removed Puerto Rico from its list of colonies.  The US claimed that with the creation of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico in 1952, she stopped being a colony.  The UN accepted.

Through the years, the UN realized that PR never stopped being a colony of the US.  Nevertheless, the UN has never returned PR back on its list of colonies.  How could that help in decolonizing PR? We have to work with the truth to solve problems for real!   Obviously, that decision is on the side of being part of the problem instead of the solution!

We the people, and the UN should insist that these hearings be publicized and broadcast throughout the world in order to get as many people involved who also believe that colonialism is a crime against humanity to demand its immediate abolition.  With the truth, we can all see clearly.  But with lies, we are left in the dark!  Who does that benefit?

Acompáñanos a la Naciones Unidas el lunes 18 de junio de 2012 / Join us at the United Nation on Monday, June 18, 2012

¡Gracias!

The hearing will start at 10:00 AM.  You need to go through the Visitor’s Entrance on 46th Street and 1st Avenue to get your ground pass between 9:00 and 9:45 AM.  You will need a valid picture ID card.  Flags and banners are not permitted in the conference room.  You need to say that:
I am answering Secretary General’s Ban Ki-moon’s call to get involved in decolonization.  I want to attend today’s hearing on Puerto Rico decolonization.

Should anyone be denied access to the hearing, he/she should join the protest outside the UN at 46th Street and 1st Avenue.  We would have the above banner for identification.   The demonstration would be from 10 to 5 PM.  The protest would be for denying us access after the Secretary General invited us to get involved!  So the obvious question would be:  Is the UN really trying to decolonize?

I will be addressing the Committee that day.  My keys points will be:
  • Need to publicize the hearing throughout the year
  • Educate the public about the decolonization process
  • Why decolonization can’t be a domestic matter
  • Put back Puerto Rico on the UN list of colonies
  • Colonialism is intolerable to democracies
  • Puerto Ricans need to talk amongst ourselves and decide what we want
  • Why the pressure for decolonization must be high to achieve decolonization
If you can’t attend the hearing, you can see it via the UN’s Webcam.

Thank you!

¡La unidad puertorriqueña indispensable para la descolonización! / Puerto Rican unity indispensable for decolonization!

No debemos seguir a nadie a ciegas.

When I took my first Puerto Rican history course, a classmate asked, “Why is it that Puerto Rico (PR) has so many political parties, and yet the island is a mess?”

During this entire year of trying to educate and advertise the United Nations’ (UN) yearly hearing on PR decolonization, I have witnessed many organizations I thought would welcome my collaboration, ignore me  Why are Puerto Ricans so unwilling to join forces in a common cause?  Isn’t this why we’re still a colony?

This election year, Puerto Rico will have more new political parties to choose from.  Most people believe this is a good thing.  But, is it really?

Like what my classmate was suggesting in his question in 1974, the more political parties we have that ignore each other, the more fragmented we become.  And with this fragmentation, everything remains the same.  But, why should we even play that game?  We do, because we don’t know our own history.  Just like my high school teacher used to say, “Those who don’t remember the past are condemned to relive it.”

Puerto Rico has the right to self-determination since 1960.  All Puerto Ricans have to do is agree to exercise this right.  So, what’s so hard about that?

Aside from us not being aware of UN Resolution 1514 (XV), the problem is that throughout history, we have always negotiated with the empire to solve our problems.  Therefore, we know of no other way of doing it.  And that’s exactly how the empire likes it to be, so that everything stays exactly the way it is forever!  Why not think outside the box?

The 99% of us who are being hurt by colonialism need to educate ourselves about the real history of Puerto Rico.  That would then allow us to not involve the empire, since we would then understand that the empire wants it like that.  We would then be obligated to talk amongst ourselves to find consensus on the things we must do.  This new unity will enable Puerto Ricans to take control over our destiny.  Only then, will this ever happen.

I invite Puerto Ricans to read about our history.  We don’t need to follow anyone blindly.  What we need to do is make good decisions that benefit all of us.  If we can do that, then we would truly have democracy!  Because democracy isn’t just for the 1% of us!  That would be going back to the abuses of the past.

¡Puerto Rico corre al revés! / Puerto Rico runs backwards!

Well, for Puerto Rico (PR), that is.

Most countries consume 85% of what they produce.  In PR, we consume only 15% of what we produce, and 85% of what other countries produce!  Why is PR backward to what other countries do?

Actually, the explanation is simple.  PR is a colony of the United States.  That means that the political system that operates here is not for the benefit of the residents of PR.  Colonies are for the benefit of the metropolis.  So, for the US government, Puerto Rico is running forward as it has been designed to!

The disastrous consequences for PR are:
·         High unemployment
·         College graduates leave PR in search for jobs
·         High percentage of recruitment to the armed forces
·         High crime rates
·         High cost of living
·         High percentage of high school drop-out
·         The list goes on…

What can PR do?

We can boycott the elections to draw attention to the fact the PR is a colony.  As a colony, it makes no sense to hold elections, if we can’t decide anything of substance to solve our problems.

We then need to decolonize PR through the United Nations (UN).  The UN is the international entity that has jurisdiction in decolonization matters since 1960.

Democracy is not just putting a ballot inside a box.  It is about installing a government that is responsive to the needs of all of her citizens.  Isn’t it extremely obvious in this case that that is not happening?  So why validate a process that doesn’t work for you?  If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you have always got.  That is also called the scientific method!

Please consider attending this June 18, 2012 hearing on Puerto Rico decolonization at the UN.  Together, we can make it happen!

Why did the UN exclude Puerto Rico?

http://www.un.org/News/Press/docs/2012/sgsm14122.doc.htm

The United Nations and Decolonization - Committee of 24 - Non-Self-Governing

http://www.un.org/News/Press/docs/2011/gacol3224.doc.htm

In a recent meeting with the United Nation’s (UN) Decolonization Committee, the Secretary General said that: “The creation of new sovereign nations was once described as one of the great liberating movements of history”.  Then, he went on to say that still there are two million people deprived of that very opportunity.  The Secretary General was mistaken!  The territory with two times more population than the total population of the 16 territories he was referring to is not on the UN list. Therefore, the real number is closer to six million!

Puerto Rico is a colony of the United States (US), with a population of about 4 million.  The reason why she is not on the UN’s list of colonies is because PR was taken off it through deception.  In 1953, the US asked the UN for her removal on the grounds that PR had obtained self government in 1952 via the establishment of the “Commonwealth of Puerto Rico”.  Although the UN has since recognized that PR never stopped being a colony, the UN has never put her back its list.

We can not decolonize the remaining colonies unless we speak frankly about the topic.  That is why I am asking that everyone who believes that colonialism is a threat to world peace, and that the only way to achieve it is through an honest and respectful dialogue among all concerned parties, to attend the June 2012 hearing on Puerto Rico decolonization.

Even if you are untouched by injustice, you should be concerned about decolonization if you believe in justice for all.  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. explained it best when he said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

I hope to see you there!
