¿Qué has hecho EEUU?

The United Nations’ Decolonization Committee will hold its annual hearing on Monday, June 23, 2014 to discuss Puerto Rico’s colonial relationship with the United States.  In 1960, the United Nations (UN) declared that colonialism is a crime against humanity.  Since then, the UN has issued 32 resolutions asking that the United States (US) government decolonize Puerto Rico, and in the more recent resolutions, asking it to release Oscar López Rivera from prison.  In essence, the international community has found the government of the United States guilty of a crime against humanity.  What has the US done?  The US has ignored all of these resolutions!  The UN is in its third decade trying to eradicate colonialism from the whole world and we would like to help.

We will hold 2 peaceful protests this year at the UN.  The first one will be on Monday, June 16, 2014 from 8 AM to 6 PM.  The second peaceful protest will be on the following Monday, June 23, 2014 on the very day of the hearing.  This year, the New York City’s Puerto Rican Day Parade, on Sunday June 8 will honor our Puerto Rican political prisoner Oscar López Rivera.  We will be also marching in the parade for Oscar’s release.

Please join us for these protests as we will need as many people as possible to make the US government comply with the UN resolutions.  Theses resolutions are supported by over 90% of the nations represented by the UN.  Doesn’t the US government believe in democracy?  Furthermore, those who accept or practice colonialism don’t believe in justice for all!

Now, we will have 2 protests for Puerto Rico decolonization at the UN

We have been announcing for several months the First Oscar – Mandela Protest in New York City for the decolonization of Puerto Rico and the release from prison of our political prisoner of 33 years Oscar Lopez Rivera.

Usually, the United Nations holds the annual hearing for Puerto Rico decolonization on the Monday following Fathers’ Day.  That is why we have be promoting the protest for June 16, 2014.  The UN, however, this year decided to hold this hearing on June 23 instead.  So, our committee decided to have 2 protests this year.  One will be on Monday June 16, 2014, the day after Fathers’ Day, and the second one will be on the following Monday, June 23, 2014, on the same day that the UN hold its hearing for petitioners concerning Puerto Rico decolonization.   Both protests will be across the street from the UN.

On Sunday, June 8, 2014, a group of us will be marching in the New York City Puerto Rican Day Parade for the release from prison of Oscar Lopez Rivera.  This year, the parade is honoring Oscar Lopez Rivera.  Click here to read about it: http://www.nprdpinc.org/tag/oscar-lopez-rivera/

Oscar has the right, by international law, to use whatever means necessary to decolonize Puerto Rico.  The United States government not only commits a crime against humanity by having Puerto Rico as its colony, but also commits another crime by having Oscar incarcerated for 33 years for doing the same thing that President Obama praised Nelson Mandela for.  The United States government has thus far ignored 32 UN resolutions asking it to immediately decolonize Puerto Rico.

We will have a press conference from New York City the week before the first protest to give you the latest details concerning the two events.  We hope to see you at both protests, because those who accept or have colonies don’t believe in justice for all!

The United States is outraged, and rightly so, over a professional basketball team owner’s racist comments about Black people.  There is universal consensus around the country that Donald Sterling’s comments are unacceptable, and that the Los Angeles Clippers owner needs to be punished to the full extent of the law.

While this story has the full attention of the United States news media, the fact that the United States (US) government has Puerto Rico as a colony for 116 years is virtually invisible.   Equally invisible is the fact that the US government has ignored 32 United Nations Resolutions asking the US to immediately decolonize Puerto Rico.  If racism is unacceptable to United States citizens, shouldn’t the fact that our own country has another country as her colony be even more unacceptable?  Isn’t enslaving an entire country an exaggerated form of racism?

If you believe that the United States government should immediately decolonize Puerto Rico, and release from prison our political prisoner of 33 years Oscar López  Rivera, please join us in our First Oscar – Mandela Protest in New York City.  It will be on Monday, June 16, 2014 from 8 AM to 5 PM outside the United Nations Building (the day after Fathers’ Day).

The United Nations is in its third decade trying to eradicate colonialism, because, like racism, it is a threat to world peace.  We need for you to be there too!
