It is a lie that Puerto Ricans have to decide!

President Obama said in this video that when Puerto Ricans make a clear decision as to what political option they want, that his administration will be ready to support it.  He said the same thing that all of the previous United States (US) presidents have said.  It sounds great, but the reality is that it is a great lie!

The truth of the matter is that Puerto Ricans don’t have to decide.  The United States government only says that because it wants us to fight among ourselves.  That way, Puerto Rico could remain its colony forever.  The United Nations (UN) already made that decision in 1960.  The problem is that the US government does not like its decision!

The UN determined that colonialism is a crime against humanity, because it threatens world peace.   Puerto Rico could not remain a US colony under international law, even if 100% of Puerto Ricans would want it.  Puerto Rico has to decolonize, whether she wants to or not.  In other words, Puerto Rico has to become an independent nation.  That’s why the UN holds an annual hearing in June to discuss the decolonization of Puerto Rico.

The UN has issued 34 resolutions asking the US government to immediately decolonize Puerto Rico.  Thus far, this government has preferred to continue committing this crime for the last 55 years, and to continue to lie to us that it is our fault that we are still a colony for not being able to decide what we want.  Puerto Rico cannot freely make decisions, when she is not free herself!

Puerto Rican political parties are useless!  Why do we need political parties when we can’t decide anything?  The US government allows this nonsense to fool the world that Puerto Rico is a democracy.  But, it is precisely because we are a colony, that we are in the financial crisis that everybody is talking about!  Our present situation is the result of 117 years of exploitation.

Instead of having these political parties pretending to be solving our colonialism, what we really need is for everyone to protest permanently until Puerto Rico is decolonized!  It must be a permanent protest, because those who lie to maintain colonies don’t believe in JUSTICE FOR ALL!

Hispanic Federation Report 2015 on Puerto Rico Debt Crisis

Click on the above link to read the report.

Here is another example of Puerto Ricans who don’t want to talk about the root of our problem.  Our problem is Puerto Rico's 117 years of a colonial relationship with the United States government.
The only place you will see colonialism referred to in this report is on the first paragraph of page 8, “…and the complicated and opt unjust relationship between the U.S. and Puerto Rico, to name a few.”
The report’s recommendations do not address the reason why Puerto Rico has this crisis.  For example, this report does not:

1.      Acknowledge that the United Nations (UN) declared colonialism a crime against humanity in 1960, because it constitutes a threat to world peace.

2.      Acknowledge that the United States government commits a crime under international law by maintaining Puerto Rico as its colony.

3.      Acknowledge the fact that the United States government has ignored 34 UN resolutions asking it to immediately decolonize Puerto Rico.

4.      Recommend as the only permanent solution to Puerto Rico’s massive exploitation by the US government since 1898, the immediate decolonization of Puerto Rico.
Puerto Rico could never remain a colony of the United States under international law even if the 5 million Puerto Ricans living off our island, and the 3.5 million living in Puerto Rico wanted to.  So there is no reason for Puerto Ricans to ever discuss at this time what political options we prefer.  That discussion will have to wait until Puerto Rico becomes an independent nation.
The report’s recommendations are ridiculous.  Colonies are for exploitation, and that is exactly what the US government has done, and will continue to do!  We need to understand is that nations that have colonies do not believe in JUSTICE FOR ALL!
The Hispanic Federation should have recommended instead that all Puerto Ricans ought to protest permanently and continuously to force the United States government to immediately decolonize Puerto Rico.  That is the obvious solution to our eternal crisis!
What are we waiting for?

The Report's Conclusion / Recommendations

Puerto Rico and its citizens are inextricably intertwined with the United States by history, emigration and economics. Puerto Ricans, both on the island and stateside, have fought valiantly in every war since World War I, and its citizens have contributed to this nation in innumerable ways.  Its diaspora – five million strong, still intimately connected to the island – are a visible presence in communities throughout the fifty States of the Union. Just as significantly, three out of every four municipal funds in the country hold Puerto Rico’s bonds.

Because of these intimate interconnections, what affects Puerto Rico affects the U.S.  The fact that Puerto Rico faces the worst economic crisis in more than a century should be of the highest concern to all Americans. If Puerto Rico is forced to enact even more draconian cuts to its budget, the island will almost certainly spiral into an even deeper crisis. Given the interpenetration of the Puerto Rican population and economy with the U.S., this will have incalculable repercussions on communities, towns and cities stateside.

The time to debate or assign blame is past, as is any hope that the U.S. could avoid economic fallout from this crisis. The real question is, do we have the will to act in order to ameliorate its very worst effects?

To do so, we urge the Administration and Congress to resist calls by hedge funds to force more cuts to social services.

We urge Congress to give Puerto Rico the ability to file for bankruptcy protection and to pass legislation rectifying economic inequities including the Jones Act and Mi Salud.  We urge the President to call for a full federal agency review of policies that are economically harmful to Puerto Rico, including health care reimbursement, and convene his Working Group on Financial Markets to develop an in-depth debt relief, repayment, and investment plan to stabilize the island’s economy. A focus on sustained growth and prosperity for the people of Puerto Rico must be at the core of this fiscal reform plan.

We urge the President and Congress to take strong, substantive and constructive action now to stabilize Puerto Rico and protect the current and future livelihood of millions of American citizens living on the island.

Todas estas acciones con el fin de:

Global Action Call to Support the People of Palestine
Let us join forces and act now to halt the zionist regime's crimes against the defenseless people of Palestine.
Venezuelan Agenda:
Monday: October 12: 9:00 AM:
Cuartel de la Montaña. Caracas. Indigenous communities and Palestine solidarity movements will pronounce themselves in support of the right of resistance of all indigenous peoples, condemn colonialism, imperialism, racism, massacres and the state of injustice that have been ending the lives of thousands of aboriginal peoples in our American continent since 1492, and which since 1948 have been attacking the Palestinian People with impunity, a people which to this day has stood steadfast in resistance.

Wednesday: October 14: Starting at 10:00 AM: Rally at the UN headquarters in Caracas. los Palos Grandes, torre HP. We're also calling for a global Twitter response in support of Palestine, starting at 11:00 AM. The action should last throughout the day. We call on Palestine supporters to use the following hashtags: #PalestineResist #PalestineIntifada and #We'reAllWithPalestine .

The purpose of these actions:

1. To express our repudiation of the ethnic cleansing of Palestinian people from the region, as well as the racist, apartheid and genocidal policies of the expansionist and colonialist "Israeli" regime.

2, To repudiate and denounce the support and complicity of some western blocks and countries like the U.S., Canada, England and the E.U., who when it comes to the "Israeli" colonialist regime, manage not only to ignore international law, nuclear energy treaties and the UN's Security Council and General Assembly resolutions, but provide it with resources and judicial cover, which have allowed that regime to continue to advance its dark agenda of ethnic cleansing against the Palestinian People.

3. To demand: that the United Nations take some responsibility in stopping these crimes, given that this body happens to be the founder of the artificial entity known today as the "state" of "Israel". That it comply with the 65+ resolutions which it generated, and which have been systematically violated by "Israel" with impunity; that it facilitate the enforcement of compliance of the "Israeli" regime, its army, functionaries and settlers with those international laws that relate to the respect for human rights.

4. To appeal to the higher conscience of the world, and call on the peoples of the world, world organizations, trade unions, government entities, local, regional and national governments to join the global boycott divestment and sanctions campaign against the "Israeli" regime, (BDSM), to nonviolently put an end to the genocide, expansionism and impunity of the zionist entity in Palestine and the rest of the Middle East.
Only by organizing ourselves can we achieve justice. The survival of peoples lies in our own actions. Knowledge, activism, participation and support for pressure campaigns like the BDSM, as well as a more conscious use of our votes to elect governments and exert pressure on them to take more honest and just stands are crucial. In addition, we need to condemn and denounce the censorship, propaganda, manipulation and disinformation promoted by the larger media outlets, which are part and parcel of international Zionism and the racism it promotes.

Puertorriqueños que no quieren hablar del Problema / Puerto Ricans who don’t want to talk about the problem

How is it possible to resolve a problem without talking about it?  This is what some want to do in Florida to arrive at a Puerto Rican diaspora consensus about the many problems that we face both here and there.

The problem with that is that our problem is precisely that we are a colony!  If we don’t realize that, and struggle to decolonize ourselves, everything else is just fooling ourselves.

Why don’t we all protest peacefully to force the United States government to comply with the 34 United Nations resolutions asking it to immediately decolonize Puerto Rico? That would be doing something specifically directed at the root of our 117 year old problem.  After that many years, it should be obvious that the US government wants to keep us a colony forever!  What are we waiting for?

Call to Action on Puerto Rico / Llamado a la Acción por Puerto Rico

We believe that A Call to Action on Puerto Rico is correct in emphasizing that all Puerto Ricans should seize this historic opportunity to demand the decolonization of Puerto Rico.
The argument by some Puerto Ricans that we should leave Puerto Rico’s colonial status out of the discussions in Florida for the sake of unity is wrong!  That is precisely the root of all of our problems.  Luis Muñoz Marín tried resolving our problems without addressing the fact that we are a colony of the United States government, and we are all living the results of that!
We should all insist that the United States government immediately comply with the United Nations’ (UN) 34 resolutions asking it to immediately decolonize Puerto Rico.
We invite A Call to Action on Puerto Rico to join our 3 annual protests to do just that.  We need a tsunami of people demanding Puerto Rico decolonization, because those who maintain colonies after the UN declared them a crime against humanity, don’t believe in JUSTICE FOR ALL!

The following is its press release:

Forging an Agenda of Struggle within the Puerto Rican Diaspora

What is wrong with the Puerto Ricans that they do not rebel?
— Ramón Emeterio Betances

In July of this year a group of Puerto Rican activists in New York put forth the position that the present collapse of the economic structure of the Puerto Rican colony, at a time when the financial institutions and Wall Street wolves continue their attacks on working people, created here in New York an opportunity to develop a movement to denounce the attacks of finance capital against our people.

In addition to stating that the debt was unpayable we said that because this is the Mecca of Wall Street and finance capital and the symbol of world capitalism, there is much we can do here to forge public opinion and denounce what is happening in Puerto Rico. We also put forth that the present is a unique historical moment and offers the opportunity to educate, denounce, and advance the cause of independence and social justice for Puerto Rico. This position is not new and has been a part of the history of struggle of Puerto Ricans here since the US invaded the island.

Our historical memory enables us to understand that the great gains made by our communities are a product of decades of militant social struggles led at the street level by community organizations and by political organizations with a pro-independence platform.

Now in October a group of Puerto Ricans, that seeks to speak for and develop a working agenda on behalf of the Puerto Rican diaspora (the exile) in the United States, have chosen to hold a meeting in Orlando, Florida. They base this choice on the fact that an enormous amount of compatriots have been moving there within the past 10 years.

They say that with this migration the power of Puerto Ricans has been transferred to that region of the United States. Certainly we must define the power that is being referred to and the accuracy, physically speaking of that statement when the diaspora, which has been here for years and now consists of more than 4 million Puerto Ricans, is concentrated in different states and regions of the United States.

We can consider ourselves exiles in the sense that we have been pushed out of our country because the colonial regime cannot guarantee food, security, education and health care for its citizens. Thus today’s massive migration, like the ones in the past, serve as an escape valve to try to contain a developing social eruption on the island.

It suddenly seems as if the primary purpose of this meeting is to develop a new political-electoral muscle in Florida by registering new voters. This is why Congressmen Gutierrez, Velázquez, Serrano and a large group of elected Puerto Rican officials from different states are heading to this meeting. Another group in attendance at this meeting will consist of dozens of executive directors of community organizations and unions with ties to the Democratic Party. Also present at this meeting will be various elected officials and representatives of the colonial government, especially members of the Federal affairs office of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. This is how the organizers of this event believe the diaspora should be mobilized and according to them, where the Puerto Rican power lies.

We certainly don’t doubt that it is their genuine desire to help Puerto Rico that leads them in that direction. They have expressed that they believe that they will persuade the empire and the bondholders to change their policy towards Puerto Rico and they will use that platform to tell the government of the US that it is their responsibility to rescue Puerto Rico from its fiscal crisis.

The case of Puerto Rican political prisoner Oscar Lopez Rivera will also be part of this agenda under the topic of Human Rights and on this point we agree. The freedom of Oscar is a priority for all of our people.

And though they recognize that there is a colonial problem, they have stated that for the sake of a greater consensus Puerto Rico’s status will not be a point of discussion. In other words the island’s status is not an issue.

We believe it would be unfair to deny that these Puerto Rican brothers and sisters have the right to meet and develop a working agenda, but to go on from there to say that this is the agenda for the Puerto Rican “diaspora” is not entirely correct.

In New York and in other cities, platforms are being developed for militant actions and challenges to the vulture funds, the Federal government and the colonial government of Puerto Rico. These actions are becoming a collective effort that begin to unite forces and can develop into an organizational model of social struggle with the banner of national liberation and social justice for our people.

There is a growing movement which puts forth the right of Puerto Ricans in exile to struggle for a better Puerto Rico, free of colonial subordination and able to fully exercise its sovereign rights.
Call to Action on Puerto Rico/Llamado a la Acción por Puerto Rico along with the different groups that have been organizing along similar lines declares:

1. That Puerto Rico’s debt is unpayable.

2.That it is the foreign corporations operating in our country who owe Puerto Rico because in the last 20 years alone they have reaped over 600 billion dollars in tax free profits.

3. That the social cost of increasing the sales tax, reducing the work day, education and health services, of eliminating labor rights gained and the dismantling of the retirement system among
other recessionary measures, are a detriment to the quality of life of the people of Puerto Rico and to the strategic development of the country’s economy. Thus, these measures are not beneficial to our country.

4. That as a colony of the United States, Puerto Rico’s position of political subordination cuts across the problem and independence would break the stalemate and create the possibilities of a solution benefiting our country.

5. That Anne O. Krueger’s report should not be a guideline for the solution as Ms. Krueger comes from the world financial institutions which generated the neo liberal policies from which several of our Latin American countries have now freed themselves. These countries have developed independent economic policies which place social wellbeing over the greedy profits of corporate and finance capital.

6. That the root of the problem is the colonial status of Puerto Rico. In this regard the UN resolution on Puerto Rico adopted on June 22, 2015 states that “the condition of political subordination prevents Puerto Rico from taking sovereign decisions to attend to its serious economic and social problems including unemployment, marginalization and poverty.” Understanding that this is a unique and historical moment which offers us the opportunity to educate, denounce, and advance the cause of independence and social justice for Puerto Rico, we will strive to further develop the work that we have begun and to broaden and give continuity to a plan of struggle that will lead us in that direction.

1. Que la deuda es impagable

The Palestinian – Puerto Rican Connection

http://s63.podbean.com/pb/5cb98a04a6b36cb9fdc730c6c1221d45/56173bfb/data1/blogs49/478674/uploads/marta_rodriques_10_8_2015_podcast.mp3

Marta Rodriguez is a Puerto Rican involved with Palestine’s struggle for a very long time.  Click on
the above link to hear a recent interview about a political prisoner she is involved in trying to liberate.  https://freeamer.wordpress.com/2015/10/12/sample-letter-101215/

She was asked towards the end of the interview, how she got involved with Palestine?  She connected Palestine with Puerto Rico, and Israel with the United States government.  As a colony, Puerto Rico supports the United States government, and it supports Israel.

This is why we need to protest continuously for Puerto Rico decolonization.  We must, because a government that violates Puerto Ricans' human rights, and also supports another government to do the same in Palestine, doesn’t believe in JUSTICE FOR ALL!

Convening for a National Puerto Rican Agenda

UnidosPorPuertoRico will be meeting next Tuesday and Wednesday in Orlando Florida.  Here are the topics that it will discuss.  All of them have to do with the fact that Puerto Rico has been a colony of the United States government since 1898.

If colonialism is a crime, and the United Nations (UN) has already asked the United States (US)government 34 times to immediately decolonize Puerto Rico, and it has ignored the democratic decision of the international community, why don't we instead have a massive protest to force the US to comply with these UN resolutions?

Wouldn't it be better to fix the problem at the core than picking at the symptoms one by one?  Remember, those who maintain colonies, don't believe in JUSTICE FOR ALL!

The coalition “Unidos Por Puerto Rico,” in conjunction with leaders of the stateside Puerto Rican community are calling for a national convening in Orlando, Florida on October 13-14, 2015 to develop a National Puerto Rican Agenda in support of Puerto Rico and stateside Puerto Ricans. This national gathering will bring together government and civic leaders from Florida and throughout the US, as well as the Island, who lead Puerto Rican movements and networks aimed at providing solutions for the current crisis issues in Puerto Rico and in the US.

The objective of the National Convening is to create a comprehensive National Puerto Rican Agenda which encompasses the problems affecting Puerto Ricans both in the island and in the U.S. The Florida event will focus on the crisis in Puerto Rico. Currently, there are multiple ongoing local initiatives in the United States calling for and in support of Congressional and Presidential action to solve the fiscal and economic crisis in Puerto Rico.

The emergent national coalition will discuss the issues of the Fiscal Crisis, Health Care Crisis, Climate Change and Infrastructure Support, and Human Rights and Civic Engagement, all critical to the revitalization of Puerto Rico. A National Puerto Rican Agenda will serve as a guide for Puerto Ricans interested in taking an active role in the solutions and for elected officials advocating for the interests of Puerto Rico and the Diaspora.

“Unidos Por Puerto Rico,” is the organizing committee which encompasses a broad coalition of Central Florida groups that includes Iniciativa Acción Puertorriqueña, Hispanic Federation, Puerto Rican Bar Association of Florida, PRFAA, Asociación de Puertorriqueños Viviendo en la Florida, and other leaders. Acacia’s El Centro Borinqueño (formerly Asociación Borinqueña) will host the event. Support groups for “Unidos Por Puerto Rico” have been formed in Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Orlando and New Jersey though it is expected that delegates from other states will join the event.

The program starts with a Welcome Reception on Tuesday evening (6pm-9pm), where representatives from the local “Unidos Por Puerto Rico” will discuss the impact of the current migratory wave from Puerto Rico is having in the region, the political and social challenges facing the community, and the multiple ongoing initiatives addressing these problems. On Wednesday the program begins with a Congressional Briefing Panel, where Rep. Nydia Velázquez (D-NY), Rep. Luis Gutiérrez (D-IL), and Rep. Jose Serrano (D-NY) will discuss pending legislation in Congress and other ongoing national initiatives.

After the Congressional Briefing Panel concludes, the deliberations proceed in breakout sessions as follows. The expected outcome of these breakout sessions is the action agenda for each of the topics.

Topic 1. – Fiscal CrisisAnchor: Puerto Rican Bar Association of Florida
Puerto Rico is in a prolonged recession that has resulted in massive migration to the U.S. and declining population in the island, as well as crushing debt obligations. These factors in turn have resulted in a sizeable decline in tax revenues and wide-ranging austerity measures.  Currently, the unemployment rate in Puerto Rico has remained over 11%, and the poverty rate is about 45%; both indicators are substantially higher than any state.
Any understanding of the structural factors contributing to the current economic crisis in Puerto Rico must fully consider its territorial status.  As a U.S. territory, Puerto Rico’s currency and monetary policy, commerce, taxes and other key economic and legal areas are ruled by federal law, in a fashion similar to any other state. The Commonwealth government lacks authority to regulate important economic areas as an independent nation would, such as: manipulation of its currency to satisfy debt obligations, or the transport of products to its ports. Congressional and Presidential action is required to overcome the economic crisis in Puerto Rico.
The discussion of this session will focus deliberations on:
Puerto Rico’s territory status places all responsibility in establishing an orderly legal process for the restructuring of the debt on the U.S. authorities. An orderly bilateral resolution of the crisis between debtors and creditors is unlikely and will only come at an unacceptably high human costs. We shall recognize the gravity of the situation, the threat to the lives and welfare of millions of Puerto Ricans, and support an urgent call for action from the American people.
An urgent call upon the United States Congress to pass and the President to sign legislation allowing an economic hardship exemption for Puerto Rico from the Merchant Marine Act of 1920, commonly known as the “Jones Act.” The goal is to allow vessels built outside of the United States to transport energy supplies, among other bulk cargo, between ports in Puerto Rico and other ports in the United States. We should all recognize the gravity of the situation and that the increase in qualified cargo vessels would lower energy costs and support the economic recovery of Puerto Rico.

Topic 2. – Health Care Crisis
Anchor: Iniciativa Acción Puertorriqueña
Puerto Ricans pay the same Medicare taxes as other Americans, yet the federal contribution to territories are capped at 50 percent. Reimbursement to the poorest states is as high as 83 percent, while only the wealthiest states receive 50 percent reimbursement. Considering that “up to 60 percent of the Island’s population receives their health care through Medicare, Medicare Advantage or Medicaid,” Puerto Rico would be among the states with the higher reimbursements if not for the 50 percent cap to territories. This disparity in treatment represent billions of dollars annually for the provision of health services to poor Americans who are Puerto Rico residents.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), enacted by Congress in 2010, provided $6.4 billion to close the disparity in funding to Puerto Rico. Though an improvement when compared to prior transfers to territories, this temporary measures expires in Fiscal Year 2019. ACA funding provides $1.1 to $1.3 billion a year in federal Medicaid funding.  When this provision expires and the territories receive Medicaid funds under the old formula, Puerto Rico will receive less than $400 million a year. In reality, Puerto Rico will run out of funding as early as late 2016 or early 2017. This situation is known in the media as the “Medicare/Medicaid cliff.” Hundreds of thousands of poor families in Puerto Rico will be affected, losing benefits and paying higher premiums. Giving the fiscal crisis in Puerto Rico, it is difficult to foresee that any local public program could mitigate the impact of the upcoming crisis.
The discussion of this session will focus deliberations on:
A call upon the United States Congress and the President to improve the treatment of the United States territories under the Medicare and Medicaid programs and to treat territories as any other state removing the 50 percent cap. American citizens paying similar Medicaid and Medicare taxes as other Americans should not be treated differently because they are residents in a U.S. territory. We should all recognize the gravity of the situation and the threat of the Medicaid/Medicare “cliff” to the lives and welfare of millions of Puerto Ricans, and supports an urgent call for action from the American people.

Topic 3. – Human Rights and Civic EngagementAnchor: Latino Justice PRLDEF
The main goal of this session is the development of an agenda to empower Puerto Ricans to fully participate in the civic life of the nation and the island and to take concrete steps to lower political and other barriers that impede reconciliation among ourselves and with others, whether these barriers are based on race or ethnicity, economic status, gender, age, sexual preference, physical condition, religious or non-religious beliefs, or immigration status.
The discussion of this session will focus deliberations on:
o   Initiatives to vigorously advocate for urgent civil and human rights issues that promote national reconciliation as is the case of Oscar López Rivera, who has become an emblematic figure of Puerto Rican unity across, party, religious and civil society lines.

Topic 4. – Climate Change and Infrastructure SupportAnchor: El Puente
This session will start with a discussion of climate change on how our communities in Puerto Rico and the U.S. are affected.
The discussion of this session will focus deliberations on:
Federal support needed to dredge the Caño Martín Peña.
Increase funding to speed up the clean-up efforts in Vieques and Culebra.

Topic 5. – State and Local Political Strategy
Elected officials only, closed door meeting.
This session will discuss initiatives responding to the ongoing crisis in Puerto Rico in several cities and states to help the island.
The discussion of this session will focus deliberations on:
Support local initiatives and legislation calling upon the United States Congress and the President to enact and make available to Puerto Rico bankruptcy processes common under federal law, to make improvements to the treatment of the United States territories under the Medicare and Medicaid programs, and to allow an economic hardship exemption for Puerto Rico from the Merchant Marine Act of 1920, commonly known as the “Jones Act.”
