¿Quién debe ser más agresivo para lograr la descolonización de Puerto Rico? / Who needs to be more aggressive for Puerto Rico decolonization?

Mientras escuchaba a los peticionarios durante la reciente vista de descolonización (18 de junio de 2012), muchos pedían que la Organización de Naciones Unidas (ONU) sea más agresiva.  Creo que Puerto Rico es la que tiene que ser más agresiva primero, antes que la ONU pueda actuar en su defensa.  ¡Nosotros somos los que tenemos el derecho internacional a la autodeterminación e independencia, y no la ONU!

¿Qué es lo que tiene que ser Puerto Rico (PR) para ser más agresiva?  ¡Tenemos que dejar de validar el estatus quo!

Cada vez que participamos el las elecciones y plebiscitos  puertorriqueños, o las convenciones Demócratas y Republicanas/recaudaciones de fondos, estamos aceptando el estatus quo.  Cuando hacemos eso, estamos en esencia en acuerdo con el gobierno de Estados Unidos (EEUU) que la descolonización de PR esta bajo jurisdicción domestica.  Y mientras sigamos haciendo eso, no creo que la ONU tomará la iniciativa para resolver nuestro problema.

Tenemos que entender eso para poder resistir el impuso innato de salir a votar.  No votar, por encimita,  parece bien contradictorio al concepto de la democracia.  Pero la democracia no es simplemente poner una papeleta dentro de una caja.  Tiene mucho más que ver con un gobierno representando los deseos de sus ciudadanos.  ¡Si eso no esta pasando, por mas papeletas que pongas en una caja, no existe democracia! 

Actualmente, nosotros participamos electoralmente a un nivel de 80% aunque estamos participando menos en cada elección.  Si, al contrario, participaríamos a su vez al un 50% o menos, eso le enviaría al mundo el mensaje de que los puertorriqueños no creemos que nuestra descolonización será posible bajo las leyes del imperio.

Eso le abriría la puerta a la ONU para ejercer su jurisdicción bajo su resolución del 1960, 1514(XV), y tomar el control del proceso descolonizador.   ¡Con la solidaridad internacional a nuestro lado, no hay manera de detener el proceso!

Invito a todas las organizaciones que realmente luchan para la descolonización de PR que empiecen a educar a nuestro pueblo sobre la idea de que boicotear nuestras elecciones es más democrático que salir a votar.  Como dice el refrán: “Todo lo que brilla no es oro.” 

Si nos basamos en nuestra historia, y queremos aprender de ella, esto es lo mas lógico que podemos hacer.  ¿Por qué continuar haciendo lo que sabemos que nunca ha funcionado.  Esto me recuerda lo que mi jefe nos decía: Si siempre haces lo que siempre has hecho, siempre lograrás lo que siempre has logrado.”  ¿Es eso lo que queremos?

 

As I listened to the various petitioners during the recent Puerto Rico (PR) decolonization hearing at the United Nations (UN) (June 18, 2012), I heard many of them calling for the UN to be more aggressive.  I believe that Puerto Ricans are the ones who need to be more aggressive first, before the UN is able to act in her defense!

What would constitute Puerto Ricans being more aggressive? We must stop validating the status quo! 

Every time we participate in Puerto Rican elections and plebiscites, or the Democratic and Republican National Conventions/ fundraisers, we are accepting the status quo.  When, we do that, we, in essence, agree with the United States (US) that decolonization is a domestic issue.  And, as long as we continue to do that, I don’t believe the UN will take the initiative to solve our problem.

Puerto Ricans must understand this, before we could be able to resist the innate temptation of going out to vote.  Not voting on the surface appears very contradictory to the concept of democracy.  But democracy isn’t just the idea of putting a ballot into a box.  It is more about government being responsive to the wishes of its citizens.  If this is not happening, putting more ballots in a box does not mean you have democracy!

Presently, Puerto Ricans has an 80% participation level in political elections, although we are going down with every election.  If we were to instead participate in this year’s election at 50% or below, that would send a clear message to the world that we reject the idea that decolonization will ever happen through US jurisdiction.  

That would then give the UN the open door to exert its jurisdiction under the UN’s 1960 resolution 1514(XV) to take control of the decolonization process.  With international solidarity on our side, there would be no way the process could be stopped!

I invite all groups that are genuinely working for PR decolonization to begin an education process in PR to educate us on how an election boycott is actually more of an act of democracy than going out to vote.  It is just like the old saying, “Everything that shines isn’t gold”.  

Based on our history, and if we are willing to learn from it, it is the logical thing to do.  Why should we continue to do what has never worked?  This reminds me of what my boss used to say:  “If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you have always got.”  Is that what we want?
