Ayer le envié una carta al Secretario de la Organización de Naciones Unidas
(ONU), Ban Ki-moon. Se trata de una
propuesta para que la ONU proclame el 12 de octubre el Día Internacional
para la Descolonización Mundial. En
ese día se le informaría al mundo de las colonias todavía existentes y los países
que violan la ley internacional que prohíbe desde el 1960 el coloniaje.
¿Sabía usted que la ONU está en su tercera década tratando de erradicar mundialmente
el colonialismo? Esta proclamación y la transmisión
por radio y televisión a través de la ONU generarían la presión necesaria para
que el gobierno de Estados Unidos cumpla con las 34 resoluciones para
descolonizar a Puerto Rico.
A continuación esta una copia de mi carta. Le invito que escriba cartas a las gentes que
usted crea que pueda ayudar a lograr esta proclamación. Después de 117 años de coloniaje con el
gobierno de Estados Unidos, es obvio que nunca descolonizara a Puerto Rico por
su cuenta.

Estimado Secretario General Ban Ki-moon:
Soy Jose M Lopez Sierra de la colonia más vieja del mundo.
Sé que la Organización de Naciones Unidas (ONU) está en su tercera década
tratando de erradicar del mundo el coloniaje.
Como usted bien sabe, Puerto Rico es la colonia más antigua y más
poblada entre todas.
Debido a nuestra relación colonial de 117 años con el gobierno de
Estados Unidos, tenemos ahora más puertorriqueños fuera de nuestro territorio
nacional. Esto, obviamente representa
una aberración que demuestra en una forma gráfica el hecho que el gobierno de
Puerto Rico, que no es otra cosa que el mismo gobierno de Estados Unidos, no
responde a los intereses de los puertorriqueños. Lógicamente, tiene que ser así ya que de eso
se trata una relación colonial.
Ya han pasado 55 años desde que la ONU declaró el coloniaje un crimen un
contra de la humanidad. En esos 55 años, la ONU ha sido incapaz de ejercer
la presión internacional necesaria para obligar al gobierno de Estados Unidos a
reducir la amenaza a la paz mundial.
Le propongo que la ONU declare el 12 de octubre (Día de Cristóbal Colon)
el Día Internacional de Descolonización Mundial. En ese día, se le informaría al mundo de
todas las colonias de todavía existen y cuáles son los países que todavía
violan la ley internacional que prohíbe el coloniaje. Esta campaña informativa en combinación con
la transmisión en vivo de la vista sobre la descolonización de Puerto Rico por
radio y televisión de la ONU, generaría la presión internacional necesaria para
que el gobierno de Estados Unidos cumpla con las 34 resoluciones para la descolonización
de Puerto Rico. ¡Después de 117 años de una
relación colonial con Puerto Rico, es obvio que el gobierno de Estados Unidos
no descolonizará a Puerto Rico hasta que se le obliga! Estaré disponible si le interesa discutir
esta propuesta personalmente.
Gracias por su tiempo, y siempre estaré a su disposición para cualquier
asunto sobre la erradicación del colonialismo.
Dr. King entendió perfectamente que no sería
posible la paz sin justicia. Por eso es
que el norte de la ONU debería ser: “Injustice anywhere, is a threat to justice
everywhere.”

I sent yesterday a letter to Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), Ban Ki-moon. It was a proposal to convert Columbus Day (October 12th) into International Decolonization Day. In case you didn't know, the UN is currently in its third decade trying to eradicate the world of colonialism.
On this day, the world would be informed of all the remaining colonies, and what countries are still in violation to the international law that prohibits colonialism since 1960. Puerto Rico is the oldest and most populated colony of them all. It has been a colony of the United States government for 117 years. Oscar Lopez Rivera has been imprisoned for 34 years for his efforts to decolonize Puerto Rico. Oscar has the right to do this under international law. It is the US government that is the criminal!

Dear Secretary General Ban
Ki-moon:
My name is José M López
Sierra from the oldest colony in the world.
I know that the United
Nations (UN) is in its third decade trying to eradicate world colonialism. As you well know, Puerto Rico is the most
populated of the remaining colonies.
Due to over a hundred years
of United States colonialism, we now have more Puerto Ricans living away from
our national territory. This, of course,
constitutes an aberration that clearly demonstrates, in the most graphic manner
possible, how the “Puerto Rican government”, which in reality is the United
States government, isn’t responding to the needs of the residence of Puerto
Rico. How could it? Isn’t that the essence of colonialism?
55 years has gone by since
the UN declared colonialism a crime against humanity. And in those 55 years, the UN has been ineffective
in exerting the level of international pressure necessary to make the
United States government comply with international law, and reduce the threat
of world peace.
May I propose this grass root
initiative to convert the celebration of Columbus Day (October 12th)
to International Decolonization Day?
On this day, the world would be reminded of all of the existing colonies,
and the names of the countries that are still in violation to international law
that prohibits colonialism. This,
coupled with the UN broadcasting live the Puerto Rico decolonization hearing,
by both radio and television, so that the world could be aware of the yearly
discussions, would focus the necessary international pressure to force the
United States government to comply with the existing 34 UN resolutions which it
has thus far ignored for so long. After
117 years of US-Puerto Rico colonialism, we could safely conclude that the US
government will not decolonize unless forced to! If you would like to speak to me personally
about this, I would be happy to do that.
Thank you for your time. Count on me to help the UN achieve the
eradication of colonialism. That is
intrinsically connected to the essence of the UN’s mission. Without it, the UN would have no reason to
exist.
Dr. King had it right when he
said, “There could be no peace without justice.
Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”
