Puerto Rican Day Parade brings a national art exhibit “One Voice” to Newark in honor of Oscar Lopez Rivera

The Puerto Rican Day Parade of Newark, New Jersey is celebrating its 55th anniversary on Sunday, September 18, 2016 at 12:00 PM starting at Rafael Hernandez Elementary School Broadway & Harvey Street (Puerto Rico Avenue).  The Puerto Rican Day Parade of Newark, NJ is the largest Puerto Rican parade organization in the state of New Jersey.  Among its mission is to instill a sense of pride and self-worth in the Puerto Rican community through the exhibition of art, music, literature, education, and civic engagement. The 2016 parade is dedicated to the town of San Juan, to Oscar Lopez Rivera, and Alzheimer’s Awareness.
  
As such, the Puerto Rican Day Parade, with the co-sponsorship of the City of Newark and the NJ Committee to Free Oscar López Rivera are hosting the nationwide art exhibit titled “With One Voice.”  This exhibit, curated by Gustavo Santiago and Marisol Velez, consists of works from more than 40 distinguished Puerto Rican artists, such as Nitza Tufiño, Luis Sanchez, Antonio Martorell, Nick Quijano, Luis Maisonet, Nelson Sambolin, among others, and Oscar López Rivera himself.  The exhibit has been traveling in New York, Pennsylvania, Florida, and Illinois during the last few months.  Many of the works of art will be available for purchase by the general audience.

There will be an opening reception for the exhibit on September 11, 2016 at 6:00 pm following the flag raising events at Newark City Hall on the same day.  The exhibit, free to the public, will be held in Newark, NJ from September 11–17, 2016 at the Vince Lombardi Center, 201 Bloomfield Avenue from 10 AM to 9 PM.  There will also be a selection from the exhibition located on the second floor at the Newark City Hall.  Group visits can be scheduled by contacting the exhibit organizers at the Puerto Rican Parade office at the Lombardi Center, 973-5660809 or 201-563-9878.  There will also be a special gathering for the NJ artistic community at the Vince Lombardi Center on Tuesday, September 13th at 6:30 PM.

Mr. López Rivera is serving a sentence for “seditious conspiracy” similar to Nelson Mandela, but has served more time for the same charge. The Puerto Rican Parade has urged President Obama to pardon Oscar López Rivera on a humanitarian basis. The Newark Municipal Council passed a resolution in December 2015 calling for his release.  The parade joins the unanimous support for Oscar López Rivera by all Puerto Rican political, social, labor, and religious organizations, as well as the international community.

El Desfile Puertorriqueño de Newark, Nueva Jersey está celebrando su 55 aniversario el domingo, 18 de septiembre de 2016 comenzando a las 12 PM en la Avenida Puerto Rico (Inicia en la escuela elementar Rafael Hernandez - Broadway & Harvey Street).   El Desfile Puertorriqueño de Newark, Nueva Jersey es la mayor parada Puertorriqueña en el estado de Nueva Jersey.  En parte su misión es inculcar un sentido de orgullo y autoestima en la comunidad puertorriqueña a través de la exposición de arte, música, literatura,  educación y el compromiso cívico. El desfile de este año 2016 será dedicado a la ciudad de San Juan, a Oscar López Rivera , y la conciencia del Alzheimer.
 
Como tal, El Desfile Puertorriqueño, con el cu-auspicio de la Ciudad de Newark y el Comité de NJ Pro-Libertad de Oscar López Rivera son anfitriones de la exposición de arte a nivel nacional titulado " Una Sola Voz." Esta exposición, cuyo curadores son Gustavo Santiago y Marisol Vélez, se compone de obras de más de 40 artistas puertorriqueños distinguidos, como Nitza Tufiño, Luis Sánchez, Antonio Martorell, Nick Quijano, Luis Maisonet, Nelson Sambolin, entre otros, y el propio Oscar López Rivera. La exposición ha estado viajando en Nueva York, Pensilvania, Florida e Illinois durante los últimos meses. Muchas de las obras de arte estarán disponibles para su compra por el público en general.
 
Habrá una recepción de apertura para la exposición el 11 de septiembre 2016 a las 6PM después del izamiento de la bandera puertorriqueña en el Ayuntamiento de Newark en el mismo día. La muestra, gratuita para el público, se llevará a cabo en Newark, NJ desde 11-17 de septiembre 2016 en el Vince Lombardi Center, 201 Bloomfield Avenue desde las 10 AM-9 PM. Tambien habrá una selección de la exposición en el segundo piso del Ayuntamiento Municipal de Newark.  Las visitas en grupo se pueden programar poniéndose en contacto con los organizadores de la exhibición en la oficina del Desfile Puertorriqueño en el Centro Lombardi, 201-563-9878 o  973-566-0809. También habrá una reunión especial para la comunidad artística de NJ en el Centro Vince Lombardi el 13 de septiembre a las 6:30 PM.
 
El Sr. López Rivera cumple una condena por "conspiración sediciosa" similar a Nelson Mandela, pero ha servido más tiempo para el mismo cargo. El Desfile Puertorriqueño ha instado al Presidente Obama a perdonar Oscar López Rivera sobre bases humanitaria . El Consejo Municipal de Newark aprobó una resolución en diciembre del año 2015 pidiendo su liberación. Así el desfile se une al apoyo unánime a Oscar López Rivera por todas las organizaciones políticas, sociales, laborales y religiosas puertorriqueñas, así como de la comunidad internacional. ###
