The following is a
summary of this documentary:
In the late
1960s, conditions for Puerto Ricans in the United States reached a breaking
point. Produced in 1971, the hard-hitting documentary "El Pueblo Se
Levanta" (50 min) focuses on the poverty and oppression of New York City's
own East Harlem.
Narrated by
the people it portrays, the film captures the dual compassion and militancy of
the activist group the Young Lords as they began to take direct action to
improve the conditions of their community.
Join us for
a screening of the film followed by a talkback with Juan González, a founding
member of the Young Lords and now co-host of the Democracy Now! News program.
Moderated by Dr. Sarah Seidman, curator of the Museum's Activist New York
exhibition.

The
conditions for Puerto Ricans in New York City was in total contrast to what
United States (US) General Nelson Miles said to Puerto Ricans in 1898 after the
US Government (USG) militarily invaded Puerto Rico. This is what he said:
“We have not
come to make war upon the people of a country that for centuries has been
oppressed, but, on the contrary, to bring you protection. . . . This is not a
war of devastation, but one to give to all within the control of its military
and naval forces the advantages and blessings of enlightened civilization.”

The fact of the matter
has been that the USG invaded Puerto Rico 120 years ago to continue to oppress
Puerto Ricans. Today, Puerto Rico is still a US colony despite the fact that
colonialism is a crime against humanity!
We need to engage in
permanent resistance to force the USG to comply with the United Nations’ (UN)
Charter that prohibits colonialism, and the 37 UN resolutions asking it to
immediately return Puerto Rico’s sovereignty to the Puerto Ricans.
Get involved, because
those who lie to exploit us don’t believe in LIBERTY AND IN JUSTICE FOR ALL! https://www.facebook.com/groups/1697349163904877/
