What’s behind “US exceptionalism”?

United States (US) exceptionalism is why the world regards her as the biggest threat to peace. The US wants America for the Americans, Europe for the Americans, Asia for the Americans, and Africa for the Americans. The US demands always a win-lose relationship. That is why she has 800 military bases all around the world.

Are US citizens exceptional for the US government (USG)? Only its 1% are. We know that, because 8 of the 10 wealthiest men in the world are US citizens. We know that, because the US is the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic, with over a million deaths. And we know that too, because the USG would rather fund the war in Ukraine, than to take care of its own citizens’ needs at home.

“US exceptionalism” means that the USG supports the independence of Taiwan, to sabotage China’s accelerated rise that will soon end US hegemony. Las Madres contra la Guerra honramos la memoria de todos los soldados fallecidos en las guerras. Aunque Puerto Rico no le ha declarado la guerra a ningún país, más de 200,000 sodados puertorriqueños han servido en guerras estadounidenses desde la Primera Guerra Mundial. Han fallecido unos 1500 soldados en los campos de guerra : 765 muertos y 127 desaparecidos en Korea; 332 boricuas muertos y 18 desaparecidos en Vietnam y 124 fallecidos en lo que va de la llamada “guerra contra el terrorismo”.  Además han muerto en otros conflictos bélicos: Granada, Latinoamérica, Africa...Oramos porque su sangre sea semilla de paz...

El presidente Dwight D. Eisenhower advirtió en su discurso de despedida en 1961 que: “En los consejos de gobierno, debemos evitar la compra de influencias injustificadas, ya sea buscadas o no, por el complejo industrial-militar.” Ese complejo militar industrial dicta en gran medida las incursiones en guerras, por el afán de lucro de los que hacen dinero con las guerras: los inversores del complejo militar industrial: los que venden armamentos y aviones de guerra no tripulados, los que se lucran con el petróleo iraquí, el gas natural afgano y otros recursos naturales de los pueblos ocupados.

Miles de militares mueren al regreso de las guerras por condiciones delicadas de salud, tales como contaminación con el agente naranja, usado cuando la guerra de Vietnam. Cientos de veteranos han muerto a consecuencia de su exposición pues produce diabetes, cáncer y muchas otras enfermedades. Durante la llamada guerra contra el terrorismo, se han  usado fósforo blanco y uranio reducido. Ambos producen cáncer y daño neurológico. El uranio es un metal pesado que dura cuatro mil millones de aňos y que contamina y daňa la salud de militares y civiles.

Muchos de ellos padecen de condiciones de salud mental :ansiedad, depresión, adicciones y trastornos emocionales, síndrome post traumático del estrés. Veinte militares o veteranos se suicidan diariamente. 

Algunas Víctimas de estas guerras a quienes hemos acompañado en los sepelios son :

Michael Martínez Santiago, de 29 aňos, soldado del Primer Batallón, División de 1ra Infantería de Juana Díaz, Puerto Rico. Muere cuando su vehículo se viró en Baquya, Irak, el 6 de septiembre, de 2004, en su segunda ronda a Irak, indicando su madre que él estaba en contra de esa guerra y sus desmanes.

Ramón Mateo, de 20 aňos, Marino de Guerra boricua, perteneciente al 7mo Regimiento de la Marina de Guerra, 1ra División, de Sudiariamente lt, Nueva York. Muere como resultado del enfrentamiento bélico en su tercer día de su regreso por segunda ocasión a Irak, en Al Anbar, el 24 de septiembre de 2004. Informa su madre que él le había manifestado que no quería regresar a Irak, pues se había metido en problemas con su comandante oficial al negarse a apuntar con un arma a un niňo de unos 8 aňos.

Sargento Gary Alexander Vaillant Santiago, de 41 aňos, del 2do Batallón, del Regimiento #72, 2da División de Infantería, de Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, muere el 5 de septiembre de 2004 cuando el tanque en el cual viajaba tocó un explosivo en Khalidiya, Irak. Su madre, Doňa Rosín indica que su hijo, por ser ministro evangélico, le había expresado que estaba en contra de la guerra.

Miguel Angel Ramos Vargas, de 39 aňos, perteneciente al Batallón 335 de la Guardia Nacional de Mayagüez, PR, muere cuando protege con su cuerpo a un compaňero en Bagdad, Irak, el 31 de mayo de 2005. Su madre, Doňa Eloína Vargas, nos  indica que él estaba contra la guerra, dejando estipulado que su esposa no recibiera las medallas póstumas o la bandera norteamericana, cosa que no ocurrió, por temor de la viuda a no ser elegible para las ayudas federales como le explicara un oficial militar, cosa que no es cierto.

Nosotras nos preguntamos, ¿y para qué? Tantos sacrificios para los militares y sus familias, tantas vidas tronchadas … Hoy somos testigos de guerras que llevan al caos y a la muerte de civiles y militares en Siria, en Ucrania , en Yemen, Palestina y a muchos lugares de nuestra tierra. En plalabras del veterano boricua Tom Soto: “honremos la memoria de los muertos, luchando por los vivos...” Seguiremos al lado de nuestros familiares militares y a la juventud le decimos que no firmen un contrato militar. iQue regresen las tropas ya!

What Boricuas must understand is that we can’t solve that problem without solving the bigger one.

Boriken, the indigenous people’s name for Puerto Rico, has been a United States (US) colony for the past 124 years. Boricuas must control the process

The problem with that is that the one who has committed the crime is the one that is in total control of the process. The Boricuas are the ones who have the inalienable right to our self-determination and independence. Therefore, that house bill is totally unnecessary!

Can an independent PR prosper?
