Why should we vote in the Puerto Rican elections?

Most Puerto Ricans will tell you that it doesn’t matter who wins the elections, because nothing will change.  Some say we should vote, because your vote is sacred.  Still others say that in a democracy, if you don’t vote, then others will make decisions for you.  That’s what former PR governor Aníbal Acevedo told me.  They all seem to have some element of common sense, as government propaganda also does.  That’s why; we must always analyze everything to determine who is telling truth!

Let’s begin with Puerto Rico (PR) being a democracy.  On the contrary, PR has always been a colony.  First, we were a colony of Spain for 405 years.  Then, we’ve been a colony of the United States (US) for 114 years ever since.  There was only a period of less than a year when we enjoyed self government in 1897, but the US refused to recognize it.  For this reason, voting in a colonial relationship makes no sense for the majority of Puerto Ricans.

Therefore, the argument that others will make decisions for you if you don’t vote makes no sense either.  The whole idea of having a colony is for exploitation.  The colony never decides anything, because the empire imposes what it wants.  That’s why most Puerto Ricans are telling the truth when they say that, no matter who wins, everything stays the same.  By everything, we mean that PR remains a colony.

Thus, the only purpose for Puerto Rican elections is to fool everybody that we have a democracy.  Who does that benefit?  Obviously, it benefits the US, because she could say to the United Nations (UN) and the international community that Puerto Ricans are happy with the status quo.  The proof is that we participate in her political process.  And, of course, it also benefits those few Puerto Ricans who have their jobs and other interests tied-up in the colonial relationship.  But they are not looking out for what’s best for the 99% of us!

As long as we continue to participate in our fake elections, and as long as the US controls the process, the international community will not interfere with a relationship that it perceives to have the support of the Puerto Ricans.  And that’s why we’ve been a colony for this long!

What about the argument of the sacred vote?  Why use a sacred vote if it will not direct government to where you want it to go?  Why not use it instead where it will cause the change that you want?  This, or course, will require breaking a bad habit.  But, we all need to do that every now and then in order to improve our quality of life!

This November 2012, boycott the Puerto Rico elections.  This would be our new way to vote.  That would cause more of a change in the status quo than actually casting our traditional vote.  How?

When the government realizes that it didn’t get the usual 85% of voter participation this year, it will then know that Puerto Ricans decided not to cooperate anymore with the lie that PR is a democracy.

PR would then be in a great position to ask the UN to begin our decolonization process.  For those of you who may not know, decolonization is not under the jurisdiction of any country.  It is under the jurisdiction of international law.  This plan would allow us to build the domestic and international solidarity critically needed for our decolonization.

Think about this new way of voting.  If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you have always gotten.  Ask yourself: Do you really want PR to stop being a colony?

  • Bajo autoestima etc., etc., etc.

Which Puerto Ricans should decide Puerto Rico’s future?

All of us should regardless whether we are on or off the island of Puerto Rico (PR).  Anything less than that would compound the 114 year old crime committed to Puerto Ricans.

The US went to war with Spain in 1898.  At that time PR was an autonomous government since the previous year (1897).  We were finally enjoying our self government after over 400 years of Spanish colonial rule.

Without any regards to the rights that Puerto Ricans had fought long and hard for, the US forced Spain to give PR up despite the fact that she had no right to do so.

Simon Bolívar had known that the US, England, France and Mexico all wanted Cuba and Puerto Rico as their own colonies.  That was why he could not finish liberating all of Spain’s colonies in America.

The US has destroyed Puerto Rican industry, and has forced us to consume her goods for 114 years.  That is why there are no jobs in PR.  And the few we do have pays a third of what the same job pays in the US.  Incredibly however, we are the US’ sixth market among all nations that trade with her!

Colonialism, like slavery, is an international crime against humanity.  Crimes against humanity were exactly what the Nazi officers who were captured after World War II were tried for during the Nuremberg trials.

Some of the devastating consequences of our colonial relationship with the US are:
  • PR has more than twice the crime as New York City despite having only half of NY’s population.
  • 70% of the reported crimes in PR are unresolved
  • PR has a high rates of mental illnesses
  • High alcoholism, drug abuse
  • High drop outs, domestic violence
  • Low self-esteem, etc., etc., etc.
As a result of this chaos, Puerto Ricans have been forced to leave PR in search of the opportunities that colonialism has deprived them from having in our own homeland.  Don Pedro Albizu Campos said that the US wanted the cage (PR) and not the birds (Puerto Ricans).  The fact of the matter is that we now have for the first time in history more Puerto Ricans living off the island than on it.  Only by forcing the remaining 3.7 million Puerto Ricans off Puerto Rico will the US grant statehood for PR.  Then, the US would have the cage Albizu Campos referred to.

The future of PR will be whatever all Puerto Ricans decide.  This is why it is imperative that all Puerto Ricans begin to learn our real history.  That way, we will be able to talk intelligently about our future.  114 years of colonialism means a lot of propaganda that we have internalized, in the interest of getting Puerto Ricans to go along with this crime.  It will take some time to undo the damage caused over a century of injustice.  But, we need to begin the process now!

Estados Unidos impuso su ciudadanía a los puertorriqueños / The United States imposed her citizenship on Puerto Ricans

Puerto Ricans in World War I - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

EEUU obligó a España a cederle a Puerto Rico ilegalmente.

It says almost everywhere that the United States (US) granted Puerto Ricans her citizenship.  This link is one of the few places where I found the truth.  The US imposed her citizenship on Puerto Ricans despite the rejection of the Puerto Rican Assembly of Delegates.

Spain had already surrendered before the US military invasion of July 25, 1898.  The US bombarded the "El Morro" fort without the required warning.  Dr. José Celso Barbosa and others risked their lives crossing from Cataño by boat to help the wounded there.

The US forced Spain to give PR up illegally.  PR already had obtained autonomy from Spain through “La Carta Autonómica of 1897”.  At that time, Spain did not have the right to give PR away, and Spain told her so.  But the US insisted, regardless of the legal impediment.

Simon Bolívar already knew about the interest of the US, England, France and Mexico in Cuba and Puerto Rico.  That’s why he could no finish liberating all of the Spanish colonies in America.  He knew that to do so, he would need England’s political and economic support.  Bolivar would not have that as long as England wanted these islands for herself!

Here is “Don Pedro” giving us a much needed class in Puerto Rican history about how we became a colony. Don Pedro was not only a lawyer, but a military officer of the United States during World War I.

General Assembly Resolution A/RES/65/119

Here is the resolution by the United Nations (UN) designating 2011-2020 as the Third International Decade for the Eradication of Colonialism.

This resolution is based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

You will notice that part 4 of the resolution calls for everybody to get involved in the decolonization effort.  Our June 2013 protest at the UN is our contribution to this collective effort to reach our common goal.

Had it been possible to decolonize Puerto Rico through the 30 UN resolutions calling for it, we would have already obtained decolonization.  It has been way overdue an increase of domestic and international pressure to demand that the United States do it now!  We have been accomplice to allowing this crime to have continued this long, because:  “Justice delayed is justice denied”!
