Oscar López Rivera simboliza la descolonización de Puerto Rico / Oscar López Rivera symbolizes the decolonization of Puerto Rico

Oscar López Rivera is the oldest Puerto Rican political prisoner in the world of the world’s oldest colony.  Since May 29, 2014, Oscar has been in jail for 33 years.  This is already 6 more years than Nelson Mandela for doing exactly the same thing.  And who has him in prison?  The government of the United States (US) does.  The same one that claims to be the champion of democracy and that respects the rule of law.

The interesting thing about this is that it is the government of the United States that commits the crime and not Oscar.  Under international law, anyone who lives in a colony has the right to use whatever means necessary to decolonize.  On the contrary, the United State government has made its own laws to make the decolonization of Puerto Rico illegal and has used terrorism to halt it.

The United Nations (UN) has ask the United States government 33 times to decolonize immediately Puerto Rico.  These 33 resolutions have been approved the last 15 years by the consensus of the 29 members of the UN’s Decolonization Committee.  Till now, the US government has ignored these resolutions.  And that’s why, Oscar remains in prison.  Isn’t it ironic that 33 resolutions and Oscar’s years in prison are the same?

Oscar remains in prison because the US government, after 116 years, still does not want to decolonize Puerto Rico.  This is why, everyone who believes that colonialism is a crime against humanity should protest peacefully and permanently at least 3 times a year to decolonize Puerto Rico.

The first one will be a march in Puerto Rico to the US Courthouse on the day we celebrate the abolition of slavery-March 22.  We will call that the Second Oscar – Mandela March in Puerto Rico.  The second one will be another march in Puerto Rico on the day before the UN’s hearing on Puerto Rico decolonization.  The third one will be a protest in New York City on the day the UN holds its hearing on Puerto Rico decolonization.  We will call that one the Second Oscar – Mandela Protest in NYC.  This hearing is usually on a Monday after Fathers’ Day.  And of course, we should support all demonstrations for Oscar’s release from prison.

These protests are necessary, because those who have colonies don't believe in justice for all!

Now Puerto Ricans are the ones who must demand our decolonization in one voice too!

The United Nations (UN) in the last 15 occasions has approved with consensus resolutions asking the United States (US) government to immediately decolonize Puerto Rico, because its relationship is a crime against humanity due to its threat to world peace.  The US government has thus far ignored the 33 UN resolutions, and has maintained Puerto Rico as its colony for the past 116 years.

Puerto Rico’s colonial status, as well as our efforts to release from prison Puerto Rico’s political prisoner of 33 years Oscar López Rivera are not legal cases that could be won in the US courts.  You must keep in mind that Puerto Rico is a colony of the United States because the US wants it that way.  They are both political cases.

When the US government invaded Puerto Rico, it did not ask for Puerto Rico’s permission.  The US government also did not use the legal system.  The US government used force!  After it acquired Puerto Rico, the US created laws to maintain Puerto Rico a US colony forever.  To believe that Puerto Rico could ever be decolonize through the US government is to ignore how Puerto Rico became a US colony in the first place.  After 116 years of Puerto Rico being a US colony, it is obvious that the US government will never decolonize Puerto Rico on its own!

Now, it is the Puerto Ricans who have to demand our decolonization with one voice too.  How?

We cannot use the US government.  The so called “Puerto Rico government” is also the US government in a colony.  To use them would be to not recognize that Puerto Rico is a colony.

We must boycott the electoral process to protest our illegal political relationship with the US.  This will undoubtedly call the world’s attention since Puerto Rico usually participates electorally at an 85% level.  This will say in a convincing way to the world that Puerto Rico will no longer help the US fool the world into believing that Puerto Rico lives in a democracy.

We must instead vote with our feet to demand with one voice our decolonization!  We must protest at least 3 times a year on a permanent basis.

These protests are absolutely necessary, because any nation that has maintained a colony for 116 years, and has ignored 33 times the international community's call to decolonize, does not believe in justice for all!

USA Today readers voted Puerto Rico the best USA island

Click on the above link to read about USA Today readers voting Puerto Rico the best USA island.

If you have an apartment in mid-town Manhattan, in New York City, you would be paying a lot of money for it.  Why?  Because of its location.  Location is everything!

That's what Puerto Ricans have to understand when people who want us to stay a colony tell us that we can't make it on our own because we have no natural resources.  We may not have oil, but we do have the best location in the world!  It's all about location, location and location!  And isn't it interesting, that the best island in the USA is a colony of the USA.

Join 3 peaceful protests to force the United States (US) government to comply with the United Nations' 33 resolutions to immediately decolonize Puerto Rico.  International law has determined in 1960 that colonialism is a crime against humanity, because of its threat to world peace.  The US government has thus far ignored them all.

The first protest will be a march in Puerto Rico to the US Courthouse on March 22- Abolition of Slavery Day.  The second one will be another march in Puerto Rico on the day before the UN's hearing about the decolonization of Puerto Rico.  The third one will be a protest in New York City at the UN on the day it holds its hearing on the decolonization of Puerto Rico.  And, of course, we will support all demonstrations to release our Puerto Rican political prisoner Oscar López Rivera.

These protests are absolutely necessary because, those who have colonies don't believe in justice for all!

Why celebrate that Puerto Rico is a US colony?

We are the only ones in the world who celebrate being a colony!  For the last 116 years, Puerto Rico has been a colony of the United States (US).  We are the most populated and oldest colony in the world.  To dramatize our disaster, you should be aware that more Puerto Ricans now live outside of Puerto Rico than in.  What more proof do you need to show that Puerto Rico is administered for the interests of the United States government and not for Puerto Ricans!  Click on the following link to read an article about when Univision mistakenly wished Puerto Rico, "Happy Independence Day!"  You will notice that Univision removed that video from circulation.  http://www.latinorebels.com/2012/07/25/on-puerto-ricos-constitution-day-univision-wishes-puerto-ricans-a-happy-independence-day/

The United States invaded Puerto Rico militarily on July 25th, 1898.  After the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party insurrection of October 30th, 1950, the US government knew that it had to quiet the voices of those who denounced the US’ colonial relationship with Puerto Rico.

In 1952, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico was created to mask the US’ colony of Puerto Rico.  The “Constitution of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico” was approved on the same day the US invaded Puerto Rico in order to put that part of our history in the closet too.  The next year, the US asked the United Nations (UN) to take Puerto Rico off the list of colonies, because she had now acquired self-government.  The UN believed this lie, and that is why Puerto Rico does not appear on the list today.  And in this way, the US in 1953 hid one more thing that US does not wants the world to know!

The UN finally realized that it had been lied to.  This is why the UN holds every year a hearing to discuss the decolonization of Puerto Rico.  The UN has thus far approved 33 resolutions asking the US to immediately decolonize Puerto Rico.  The US has thus far ignored these resolutions approved by consensus for the last 15 years.  Doesn’t the US government believe in democracy?

Puerto Rico has no reason to celebrate the “Constitution of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico”, because that in fact represents being a US colony.  If we want to decolonize Puerto Rico, we cannot confuse the world that we believe we have self-government.  We should also boycott the Puerto Rico elections to dramatize the colonial relationship that we in fact do have!

Join 3 peaceful protests a year until we decolonize Puerto Rico.  The first one will be a march in Puerto Rico to the US Courthouse on March 22 – The Abolition of Slavery Day.  The second one will be another march in Puerto Rico on the day before the UN hearing concerning the decolonization of Puerto Rico.  The third one will be a protest in New York City on the day that the UN has its annual hearing about the decolonization of Puerto Rico.  Of course, we will also support all demonstrations for the release of our Puerto Rican political prisoner Oscar López Rivera.

These protests are absolutely necessary, because those who have had a colony for 116 years certainly don’t believe in justice for all!

Why is independence good for the United States and bad for Puerto Rico?

The independence of the United States (US) is celebrated on July 4th.  Before her independence, these 13 colonies belonged to England.  These colonies felt that they were being abused by England, and declared their independence.  They did not ask England permission to do so, because they knew that she would never consent to it.  A revolutionary war was fought, and that is how this holiday came about.

Puerto Ricans celebrate the 4th of July too, although they themselves are afraid of independence for Puerto Rico.  Why is that?

Puerto has always been a colony.  First, Puerto Rico was a colony of Spain for 405 years.  Puerto Rico has been a colony of the United Sates for the past 116 years.

Since the United States government does not want independence for Puerto Rico, it has used state terrorism to keep Puerto Rico from being decolonized.  The Rio Piedras, Utuado and Ponce Massacres are excellent examples of this.  More recently, the FBI’s assassination of Filiberto Ojeda Ríos in 2005, on the day Puerto Ricans celebrate “El Grito de Lares”, is another great example.  But the best example of all is the 33 years that the government of the United States has held our Puerto Rican political prisoner Oscar López Rivera in jail for fighting for the decolonization of our country.  Oscar is the US’ example to Puerto Ricans that the same thing will happen to you if you try to decolonize Puerto Rico!  And this is why most Puerto Ricans are afraid of independence for Puerto Rico.

The Colony of Puerto Rico is the reason why there are now more Puerto Ricans outside of Puerto Rico than inside.  This fact reflects Puerto Rico inability to administer Puerto Rico for the benefit of Puerto Ricans.  Puerto Rico is solely administered for the benefit of the government of the United States.

Join 3 peaceful protests a year to force the government of the United States to comply with the 33 United Nations (UN) resolutions to immediately decolonize Puerto Rico.  The first one will be a march in Puerto Rico to the US Courthouse on March 22, on the Abolition of Slavery Day.  The second one will be another march in Puerto Rico on the day before the UN holds its Puerto Rico decolonization hearing.  The third one will be a demonstration in New York City on the same day that the UN holds its Puerto Rico decolonization hearing.  This hearing is usually on a Monday after Fathers’ Day.  We will, of course, join all demonstrations for Oscar’s release from prison.

These protests are absolutely necessary, because a country that has held its colony for 116 years definitely does not believe in justice for all!

What is wrong with favoring statehood for Puerto Rico at the UN using the empire’s laws?

Many more petitioners advocated for statehood at this year’s Puerto Rico decolonization hearing at the United Nations on June 23rd 2014.  What was wrong with making this petition?  Although what they said might sound logical, they were putting the cart before the horse.  Let’s examine their main arguments.

The first thing they need to understand is that decolonization is not a domestic issue like the United States (US) claims.  If it were, why was the United States filing annual reports to the United Nations (UN) before 1953 concerning its administration of the colony of Puerto Rico?  In 1953, the US requested that Puerto Rico be taken off the list of colonies because in 1952, with the creation of The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the island had achieved “self-government”.  The UN has since then realized that it had been lied to, and that’s why the UN celebrates annually a hearing to discuss the decolonization of Puerto Rico.  To have the US manage the decolonization of Puerto Rico would represent a conflict of interest, since Puerto Rico is a colony of the United States because the US wants it that way.  So to believe that the US will ever decolonize Puerto Rico is insanity.  That is why, decolonization is under a more impartial entity - the United Nations.

The first problem the statehood advocates had was their use of the 2012 Political Status Plebiscite to argue that Puerto Ricans want to be the 51st state of the United States.  They claimed that 54 % of Puerto Ricans rejected their colonial status with the US, and that 61 % of the Puerto Ricans want statehood for Puerto Rico, in what they called, “a free and democratic election held by the Puerto Rican government”.

This Plebiscite cannot be used to decolonize Puerto Rico under international law.  The United Nations has already determined in 1960 that colonialism is a crime against humanity, because it threatens world peace.  Therefore, Puerto Rico has an illegal political relationship with the United States under international law.  Martin Luther King said it this way:  “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”  At this point, it doesn’t matter what Puerto Ricans want.  Puerto Rico has no other choice but to stop being a colony of the United States.  Therefore, this 2012 plebiscite has no validity whatsoever under international law.  If these petitioners are going to argue under the laws of the United States, they have no business petitioning at an international forum like the United Nations.  The solution under international law is for the United States to give Puerto Rico her sovereignty, so that she could be an independent nation, and thus no longer a colony.

When Puerto Rico becomes an independent nation, she will then decide what to do without any outside interference.  Should she then want to become the 51st state of the Union, she could do so, providing that the United States is willing to offer it.

Please join us to form 3 tsunami of protesters for 3 permanent and peaceful demonstrations a year until Puerto Rico gets decolonized.  The first one will be a march every March 22 in Puerto Rico on the Abolition of Slavery Day at the US Courthouse.  The second one will be a march in Puerto Rico every Sunday before the Puerto Rico decolonization hearing at the UN.  The third one will be a protest at the UN every time it has its Puerto Rico decolonization hearing.  This hearing is usually on a Monday after Fathers’ Day.

These demonstrations are necessary because, those who have colonies don’t believe in justice for all!
