Can democracy exists in a colony?

The people at the press conference spoke about democracy in Puerto Rico. They said that Puerto Ricans voted 52% for statehood. How could that be possible, when Puerto Rico has been a United States (US) colony for the past 123 years!

Puerto Ricans have no say in how our island is governed. With no opportunities for Puerto Ricans in Puerto Rico, today 5 million Puerto Ricans live away from our national territory.

Absent from this entire video is the fact that the US government (USG) is committing a crime against humanity for the past 76 years by refusing to comply with the United Nations’ (UN) Charter that prohibits colonialism.

Therefore, Puerto Ricans don’t need a bill in the US Congress to make Puerto Rico the 51^st state of the Union. Puerto Ricans need to engage in permanent resistance to force the USG to comply with international law.
