We can’t decide Puerto Rico’s future without having the right information!

The Last Colony Kickstarter Campaign with an introduction from the director Juan Agustín Márquez - YouTube

Here is a video (press the link above to see it) about the upcoming plebiscite on the status of Puerto Rico.  Despite having to first learn our real history before being able to make an intelligent choice, plebiscites are designed to keep us as a colony.  But this, of course, is criminal!

In a recent psychological study about the effects of colonialism, one of the findings was that, due to the exploitation that results in low income for Puerto Ricans, this produces a lot of the negative social statistics associated with us as a people.

Due to the United State’s conflict of interest concerning our decolonization, it is imperative that the United Nations manage the process.

Join the protest this June 17, 2013!

“US support any decision the people of Puerto Rico make.”

Oprima debajo para leerlo. / Press below to read it.
FBI — Puerto Rican Groups

This is the standard line that any United States official will make in reference to the ultimate political status of Puerto Rico (PR).  It sounds so reasonable and democratic!  But has the US government acted according to what it says?

The US encouraged the PR legislature to create Law 53 on June 10th, 1948.  It became known as, “La Ley de la Mordaza” (The Gag Law).  Its purpose was to keep people from advocating for the independence of Puerto Rico.  You can get more details about this law from Ivonne Acosta’s book called, La Mordaza (1998).  This law gave the government the right to throw you in jail for merely possessing a Puerto Rican flag.

Then there was the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) secret war against the independence of PR.  The attached link above will take you to the actual FBI documents about how it did whatever it had to do to dissuade Puerto Ricans from wanting independence for PR.

Reading these documents will remind readers of a scene in the movie The God Father.  Michael’s wife tries to convince him to stop being naïve to the lying, corruption and killing involvement in organized crime.  Michael replies, “That’s the same thing the government does.”  She refuses to believe him.  He then says, “Now, who’s being naïve?”  You can read about this too in the book The COINTELPRO Papers by Ward Churchill and Jim Vander Wall (1990).  Chapter 4 is on PR.

United Nations’ (UN) Resolution 1514 (XV) gives all nations the right to fight for their independence using whatever means possible.  Therefore, it is the US that is violating international law by interfering with PR's right to self-determination and independence.

Despite what the US government says, its historical actions prove the opposite.  This is why any decolonization process whereby the US has control over is equally as deceptive as its standard line.  This is why we need to boycott the PR elections (which are a lie about having a democracy) and have the UN manage the decolonization process.  Please join the protest and help make it happen!

The government of Puerto Rico (PR) is preparing for yet another political status plebiscite for November 6, 2012.  The purpose, like all others, is to take the results to the United States (US) Congress to decide what to do.  The problem with this is that the US wants to keep PR her colony forever, and that’s why we are the oldest colony in the world.

It is important to note that the US invaded militarily PR to colonize her.  The US is not obligated to have colonies.  In fact, most people see it as a contradiction to what the US is suppose to stand for.  She has colonies because she wants to.  And as long as EEUU has a say in the decolonization of PR, PR will remain her colony.  This is what history has proven.

That’s why in 1960, the United Nations approved Resolution 1514 (XV).  This resolution took away from empires their jurisdiction concerning decolonization and placed in under international law.  It also gives all nations the inalienable right to her self-determination and independence.  This is why the PR plebiscite is totally illegal and unnecessary.

Some people are promoting this plebiscite because they want PR to continue to be a colony of the US.  In fact, the US has always recommended the use of the plebiscite to solve PR’s status problem.  This is your best evidence that plebiscites will never decolonize PR.

Other people support this referendum because they have believed the US government’s lie that decolonization is a domestic issue that only concerns the US and PR.  If that were so, why does the UN annually hold Puerto Rico decolonization hearings?  The US is not above the law!  Where the respect for the rule of law that the US says makes her different from the rest of the world?

The majority of Puerto Ricans have to boycott this plebiscite so that we are not accomplices to this illegal and counterproductive act.

Then, we must talk amongst ourselves to decide what we want for Puerto Rico.  After we make that decision, we can ask the UN to begin the decolonization process for PR.

Puerto Ricans are the only ones who have the right to our self-determination and independence.  The US has no say in this matter!  On the contrary, the US is guilty of having PR as her colony, since the UN’s determination that it is a crime against humanity and a threat to world peace.  The only reason why the US has had PR as her colony for 114 years is by reason of force.  But, great democracies are not measured by that!  Quite the opposite!  We should all be confident that Puerto Rico will decolonize one day because we have the force of reason.

What lesson did we learn from the Puerto Rico referendum?

Oprima abajo para leerla. Press below to read it.
Puerto Rican independence movement - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

When government does not represent its citizens, you can’t believe what it says.  Here is a short history of the struggle for Puerto Rico independence.

The Puerto Rico (PR) government spent a million dollars in advertisement to convince us to vote for its proposed constitutional amendments.  It did not allow anybody who opposed its view to do the same through prohibitions that this government has installed.  Despite having all of this resource, it lost.

It did because we were able to educate ourselves on the issues, so that we could make the best decision for us.  But, had we not done so, the government would have been able to abuse us even more due to our ignorance.

Similarly, we must do the same thing in order to decolonize ourselves.  We must learn about our real history.  The government will obviously not do that, since it knows that we would not want to continue getting exploited.

It is important to note that PR had obtained her sovereignty from Spain in 1897 via the Autonomic Charter.  In this short history, it doesn’t say that the United States (US) forced Spain to cede PR to her.  Spain informed the US that she no longer had that right.  The US cared nothing about the 405 years Puerto Rican struggle to gain her sovereignty.  This information you will not get from US history books.

It is also important to note that the US has enormously benefitted from the colonial relationship with PR, while the conditions for Puerto Ricans have systematically deteriorated to the level that we have today.  This is why, for the first time in history, there are more Puerto Rican living outside of Puerto Rican than on the island.

US citizenship was imposed on the Puerto Ricans.  Our Delegates of the PR Assembly refused it in 1917.  This is also not in the US history books.  The US benefitted again by now being able to draft Puerto Rican into her military to fight in World War I.

If our relationship is so beneficial for PR, why is PR crumbling around us?  Obviously, it is because of the 114 years of exploitation of our resources.  But of course, that’s what colonies are for!

The more we study, the more we will understand that nobody wants to be a colony.  That’s why there are only 17 left in the world.  PR is the oldest and most populated.

On Sunday, August 19, 2012, only 30% of the voters decided to participate in a referendum to make amendments to the Puerto Rican constitution with regards to the absolute right to get bail, and a reduction of the legislature.

Since the major Puerto Rican political parties do not work for the residents of Puerto Rico (PR), they have to pretend they care about PR’s problem as election time approaches.  This referendum was an attempt to fool us into giving them our votes once again.  70% of the electorate that stayed home and the 16% against what the government was proposing who voted saw through this deception.

A boycott of this magnitude is what we need in the general elections this November.  If we were to get at least a 50% boycott, when we usually have 85% voter participation, we would be sending out an important message that PR is not willing to be an accomplice in deceiving the world that we have a democratic form of government

It is helpful to remember that the American Revolution occurred with only 33% favoring it!  We need to understand that people who get rich off PR being a colony will never join us to decolonize her because they don’t believe in democracy!

Instead of believing these politicians’ lies, we need to begin to educate ourselves about our real history so that we would know exactly what to do.  If we were to motivate Puerto Ricans to learn our history, I am convinced that the majority of us will do what is right.  History is our collective memory.  Without it, just like if you were to lose your own personal memory, we would be disoriented. José Marti said it this way:  “In order for a country to be free, she has to first be cultured.”

Boycott the PR elections and join the June 17, 2013 protest at the United Nations!

Whose right is it to decolonize Puerto Rico?

Puerto Ricans are the only ones who have the right to decolonize Puerto Rico (PR).  United Nations’ (UN) Resolution 1514 (XV) says that all nations have the inalienable right to their self-determination and independence.  Therefore, it is up to us to demand it!

We need to stop thinking that others will give us what we want.  The only way decolonization will occur would be for us to engage in candid and respectful dialogue to find consensus on how to make PR better.  We begin by learning our history, so that we can better make intelligent decisions about our future.  The Puerto Rican Diaspora has to also be involved!

The PR government is illegal, due to colonialism being an international crime that threatens world peace.  Why validate colonialism by participating in its elections as if we have a democracy?  Participation is interpreted to mean that we support colonialism, and that prevents the international community from intruding in a situation that appears we don’t want to change!  Does anybody really believe that another 114 years of doing what we’ve been doing up to now will get us decolonized?

Puerto Ricans need to instead boycott the elections to show the world that we know that our status quo is illegal, and want to decolonize.  This action would send a clear and powerful message to everyone that we are exercising our right to self-determination!

Those of us who still favor “The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico” must admit that it constitutes a colonial status.  As such, it can never qualify as a decolonization option, in the same way that, remaining a slave was not an option to slaves (some wanted to!) after the “Emancipation Proclamation”.

Our fear of decolonization was created by the US government’s criminalization of the independence option for PR over our 114 years of political subordination.  That is why the US has no intentions of ever releasing Oscar Lopez Rivera who has been in prison for more 31 years.  Oscar has the right to fight for the decolonization of his country.  It is the US that has committed the crime!  Although it will be a great challenge to overcome this fear, we must have the courage to admit to ourselves that the root of our problems is the exploitation of our resources for the benefit of the metropolis.

I invite everyone to boycott the elections, and join our protest on June 17, 2013 at the UN.  We must demand from the US that our right to decolonization be respected and granted immediately!  No one else can do that for us, not even the UN.  But once we do, then others can help us.

I know I am asking you to take a giant step in joining this protest!  But that is what has to happen to get the ball rolling.  You see, democracy isn’t what a government does.  It is what people do.  And when you see only 1% of the citizens benefitting, it is time overdue for you to take back your government!

Estimado(a)  Compañero(a):

¡Saludos!

Sinceramente,

José M. López Sierra

Dear Partners,

Greetings!

I invite you to join the non-violent protest to demand that the United States (US) decolonize Puerto Rico (PR) immediately.  It will be on Monday, June 17, 2013 from 8 AM to 5 PM outside the United Nations (UN) visitor’s entrance located on 46th Street and First Avenue in New York City.

The UN has determined that colonialism is a crime against humanity in 1960 under Resolution 1514 (XV).  That’s why the UN celebrates every year a hearing about Puerto Rico decolonization.  Every year the UN puts forth a resolution asking the US to decolonize PR.  Despite 30 of these resolutions, PR is still the oldest and most populated colony in the world!  It is obvious by now that the US is not going to decolonize PR just because the UN asks.

Through education, we must create a domestic and international solidarity with this cause to pressure the US to do what historically she has refused to do.  This is why we need everyone who also believes that colonialism is a crime against humanity to join the protest to demand compliance to international law!

Puerto Rico has been a colony of the US for 114 years.  The US’ intention is to keep PR a colony forever unless we do something about it.  It is important to note that: democracy isn’t what a government does.  Democracy is what people do!

President John F. Kennedy said, “Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.”  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice anywhere.”  These ideas, of course, are the reasons why the United Nations was created after World War II.

It is up to us to defend the fundamental human rights that promote world peace.  The tragedy of doing nothing is that we will have the kind of government that we deserve!

Sincerely,

José M. López Sierra
