On Friday, Comité Boricua En La Diáspora (ComBo) organized a community forum in El Barrio/East Harlem. Held in a community garden near Young Lords Way, presenters at the event included ComBo co-founders Alexandra Nicole Mihailović Court, Hillary Brens, Andrés Rodriguez, and Timothy Bryan. Featured speakers included Lourdes García, co-founder of A Call to Action on Puerto Rico and Iris Colon Dipini of the Partido Nacionalista de Puerto Rico - Junta de NY (both are also members of the 35 Mujeres NYC x Oscar collective).

Background

Nosotros somos ComBo (Comité Boricua en la Diáspora). El pasado 8 de mayo de 2016 oficializamos el Comité en el Bronx, Nueva York. El grupo está compuesto por jóvenes puertorriqueñxs de la isla que ahora forman parte de la diáspora en Nueva York, como también puertorriqueñxs nacidos en Estados Unidos de cualquier generación. Incluso, tenemos miembros residiendo en la isla nena. Nuestro propósito y nuestra labor será dirigida a organizar trabajo de base para combatir el colonialismo en la isla y en el extranjero, como también luchar en contra de la Junta de Control Fiscal y la deuda, la cual no reconocemos dado a que encontramos que es una deuda ilegítima creada y perpetuada por el actual sistema imperio-colonial. Sin embargo, también tenemos otras metas como exigir la devolución de las tierras y recursos naturales a manos puertorriqueñas, entre otros.

We are ComBo (Comité Boricua en la Diáspora). The past May 8th, 2016 we officialized the committee in the Bronx, New York. The group is composed of young Puerto Ricans born on the island, as well as Puerto Ricans born in the United States from any generation, that now form part of the diaspora in New York City. Additionally, we have members that are currently residing on the island. Our purpose and mission is to do grassroots organizing to combat colonialism on the island and abroad. Furthermore, we also aim to fight against the Fiscal Control Board and the debt, which we do not recognize as legitimate due to its inception and perpetuation by the current Empire-colonial system. Nevertheless, we also have other goals like demanding return of the island’s lands and natural resources to Puerto Rican hands, among others.
