We have to take the Puerto Rican Colony out of the Closet!

With the intention of getting Puerto Rico colonialism out of the closet, United Partners for the Decolonization of Puerto Rico invites you to The First Oscar – Mandela March in Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico has been a colony of the United States (US) for 115 years.  The United Nations has issued 32 resolutions asking the United States to immediately decolonize Puerto Rico because it considers colonialism to be a crime against humanity, and a threat to world peace.  The United States has ignored them all!

To the contrary, the government of the United States, through its laws, has chosen to criminalize Puerto Rico decolonization.  This is why our political prisoner and patriot Oscar López Rivera has been in prison for 32 years despite heavy pressure from almost everyone in Puerto Rico and the rest of the world.  The US government knows that releasing Oscar from prison also means that the US is willing to decolonize Puerto Rico.  President Obama’s resistance to free Oscar can only mean that the US still does not want to decolonize Puerto Rico.

To continue having Puerto Rico as a colony, the US government tries to hide from the world her colonial relationship.  The annual United Nations' hearing about Puerto Rico’s colonial relationship is not published on either the Puerto Rico or US media.  My three retired Puerto Rican siblings who have lived all of their lives in New York City didn’t know about these hearings which are held every year right under their noses!  These hearing will continue until Puerto Rico gets decolonized.

This is why, on Saturday, March 22, we invite you to The First Oscar – Mandela March in Puerto Rico.  We will march from the Roosevelt Avenue Station of the Urban Train, down on Luis Munoz Rivera Avenue, turning on Chardon Street, to get to the US Court in Puerto Rico.

Several speakers will address the marchers, and Pepe Sanchez will be in charge of the music.  We are particularly proud to have as our special guest, our national hero, Rafael Cancel Miranda.

Dr. Martin Luther King (MLK) Jr. could have stayed preaching in his church about the injustices, and the human and civil rights abuses he saw around him.  But the time came when he realized that he had to march to raise awareness of these violations.  Everyone, Puerto Rican or not, who also believes that colonialism is a crime against humanity should join us to demand, through one voice, Oscar’s release from prison and the immediate decolonization of Puerto Rico.  If you belong to any group, feel free to bring your flags and signs.

Injustice should never be tolerated.  That’s why MLK said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”  So, we must get colonialism out of the closet, because those who practice or accept colonialism don’t believe in justice for all.
