Why does the Puerto Rican flag have two shades of blue?

(The wrong blue)

The Puerto Rican and the Cuban flags were designed in New York City at the same time.  The only difference between the two flags is that the colors were inverted.  So the correct blue of the Puerto Rican flag is the blue on the Cuban flag.

Cuba and Puerto Rico were both Spanish colonies fighting for their independence.  They were the last 2 remaining Spanish colonies in America.  Simon Bolívar was not able to liberate them too, because the United States and three other nations wanted them for themselves.  Bolívar was interested in having these recently liberated nations recognized by them, and feared that they would not give him the needed financial and diplomatic support to free Cuba and Puerto Rico.

Under United States (US) colonialism (1898 to present), independence has been also repressed just like when Puerto Rico was Spain’s colony.  Since our flag was a symbol of Puerto Rican nationalism, the US prohibited it.  In 1948, the Gag Law (Ley de la Mordaza) made it a crime to have our flag.  When you hear a US official say that the US is willing to give PR whatever political status she wants, that is a lie.  What history shows is that the US has always repressed independence for PR.  The repression has been so traumatizing that most Puerto Ricans are afraid of the word independence and nationalism.   This is also why some Puerto Ricans are offended when Puerto Rico is called a colony.  They are fearful that the US will be upset with statements like that, and prefer, perhaps even unconsciously, to be in denial!

With the creation of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the government decided to use the Puerto Rican flag as its symbol.  It is important to remember that in 1950, the Nationalists had their uprising.  That made it necessary to do something with PR.  The government thought that using our flag was a good way to begin to make amends.  The government, however, changed the blue to a darker one to match the blue on the US flag.

The only place that I have been able to buy a Puerto Rico flag with the correct blue is at the Plaza de Mercado in Lares, or at a store on the left before you get to the Plaza de Mercado from the Plaza de la Revolution. www.Facebook.com/UnTsunamiPR/
