This is not a recent essay, but it does, however, express the fundamental problem with the use of a plebiscite to decolonize a colony.
The colony needs to be able to decide for herself what destiny she wants to persue. That would be imposible to occur as long as it is occupied by the imperial power.
The imperial power must turn over total control to the colony, free all her political prisoners, and leave the colony along with its repressive operations. Anything short of this, as the title suggests, is a trap!
