Is Puerto Rico doings as well as Fox News’ coverage of the Puerto Rican Day Parade would like us to believe?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=8cZwUwlnPik

Click above to see a little of Fox's Puerto Rican Day Parade coverage of the event

On my recent visit to New York City for our protest at the United Nations (UN), I was not able to attend the Puerto Rican Day Parade on Sunday June 9th 2013.  My sister, however, recorded the Fox News’ television broadcast of it, so that I could see it.  I’m so glad she did!

What struck me most from the hour of it that I was able to tolerate was the sense Fox gave that everything is fine and dandy in Puerto Rico.  Nothing could be father from the truth!

The only Puerto Rican co-hosting the broadcast mentioned that there are 4.2 million Puerto Ricans living outside of Puerto Rico (PR) while a lesser amount, 3.7 million Puerto Ricans have remained on our island.  Collectively, we are now equal to the population of the city of New York.

Although that probably went unnoticed, that fact constitutes an aberration.  In no country, under normal conditions, would that happen.  So the logical question is, why are more Puerto Ricans, living outside of Puerto Rico?  I believe that that is a much more serious issue for the theme of the National Puerto Rican Day Parade than the one the organizer selected about the health problems of Puerto Ricans.

As a colony of the United States (US) for 115 years on this July 25th, 2013, Puerto Rico has always been administered for the benefit of the government of the US. This is why there are no good jobs for Puerto Ricans in Puerto Rico.  Puerto Ricans are condemned to leave their island in search of opportunities that they can not find in Puerto Rico.  That is exactly how a colony is supposed to function.  A colony is for the exploitation of the empire.  This is why Pedro Albizu Campos said that the “Americans were only interested in the cage, and not the birds”.  To accomplish that, the US needs to further encourage the rest of us to abandon our beautiful homeland!

It is obvious to those of us who study Puerto Rican history to understand that the Puerto Ricans who run Puerto Rico do so for the benefit of the US government.  If they were to govern for the Puerto Ricans who live on the island, Puerto Ricans would not need to abandon our beautiful island for decent employment, or join the armed forces of the US as a desperate way out of our economic chaos.  Did you know that the US armed forces recruit more people in PR than from any of the 50 states of the Union?  Do you think that is because Puerto Ricans are more patriotic to the United States of America than the citizens her 50 states?

This is why those of us who regard colonialism as an international crime against humanity must protest peacefully 2 times a year until Puerto Rico is decolonized.  The first one will be in Puerto Rico on the Abolition of Slavery Day, and the second one on the day the UN celebrates its annual hearing on Puerto Rico decolonization (usually on the Monday after Fathers’ Day).

If after 115 years the US government has not decolonized PR, it ought to obvious to everyone that it has no intentions of ever doing so.  As additional evidence, I offer the fact that the US’ refuses to free Oscar Lopez Rivera despite huge international pressure.  For those of you, who may still have a doubt, think about the fact that President Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and is also a lawyer by profession.  He certainly knows that the US commits an international crime by not decolonizing Puerto Rico.  Not only does he continue with business as usual, but he also maintains incarcerated Oscar López Rivera despite the huge domestic and international outcry to liberate him.  How revealing is that?

Legally, the decolonization of Puerto Rico is undeniable via United Nations Resolution 1514 (XV) of 1960 declaring colonialism a crime.  Now we must make good on that resolution by providing the political pressure necessary to get the US to do what we all should know she does not want to do.  But the fact of the matter is that those who practice or accept colonialism don’t believe in justice for all.

Who is Puerto Rico’s political prisoner Oscar López Rivera?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=bSszBhlZmMc
Click on the above link to learn more about Oscar López Rivera.

Oscar has been incarcerated by the United States for 32 years for his struggle to decolonize Puerto Rico. The United Nations has issued 32 resolutions asking that the United States of America immediately decolonize Puerto Rico since it declared colonialism a crime against humanity in 1960.  The United States has ignored these 32 resolutions.  Those of us who believe that colonialism as well as slavery are crimes against humanity must work together to decolonize Puerto Rico.

Join 2 peaceful protests a year until it is accomplished.  The first one will be in Puerto Rico on the Abolition of Slavery Day in March 2014, and the second one will be in New York City on the day that the United Nations holds its annual hearing to discuss Puerto Rico’s colonial situation.

We must protest peacefully if we do not want to be accomplices to this crime.   Moreover, we must protest peacefully because those who practice or accept colonialism don’t believe in justice for all.

What is colonialism doing to Puerto Rico?

Study: Puerto Rico's children mired in poverty that dwarfs rest of U.S. - CNN.com

Click on the above link to read how people living under colonialism are deprived of the opportunities to develop as a people, so that they can satisfy their own needs.

Much is said about how much money the United States’ Government spends on Puerto Rico.  This is all propaganda designed to maintain the colonial relationship that the United States unilaterally established with Puerto Rico.  The United States is smart enough to get out of a losing deal if that were the case.

The fact of the matter is that, the government of the United States gets far more benefits from this relationship than it is willing to admit to the public.

  • A captive market for its goods and services

  • Control of an island in the Caribbean

  • Use of Puerto Rico’s resources for the empire

  • Because of the above, Puerto Ricans are forced to leave the island for opportunities (presently, more Puerto Ricans off the island than on)

  • Because the above, Puerto Rico provides more soldiers for the US Armed Forces than any other state of the Union.

  • Etc. (you get the picture)

Colonies are designed for the exploitation of the empire.  This is why we need to work together to protest for the decolonization of Puerto Rico and the liberation of Oscar Lopez Rivera. Join 2 peaceful protests a year until it is accomplished!  Protesting is necessary because, those who practice or accept colonialism don’t believe in justice for all.

What does the United States say is her reason for not wanting to decolonize Puerto Rico?

The United States’ (US) government says that it has the lawful right to govern Puerto Rico (PR) by virtue of it winning the Spanish American War against Spain and having Puerto Rico ceded to the US.

Moreover, The US claims that Puerto Rico’s political status is a domestic issue that only concerns the US and PR.

Both these arguments are wrong.

The first argument has no legal standing under international law.  The United Nations declared that colonialism is a crime against humanity (Resolution 1514 XV) in 1960.  Therefore, the US is committing a crime under international law by maintaining Puerto Rico as her colony.  To make matters worse, the United States government has been a repeated offender by ignoring 32 UN resolutions asking it to immediately decolonize Puerto Rico.

It is important to note that these resolutions have the support of over 95% of the countries that make up the UN.  Where is the respect for democracy of the government of the United States?  Isn’t it ironic that 32 years is also how many years Oscar López Rivera has been in prison for wanting his country free of colonialism?  It is Oscar who is following the law (Resolution 1514 XV) which includes using all means necessary to decolonize his country.  He is presently the longest held political prisoner in the world!

The second argument is ridiculous!  Even if you are not a lawyer, you are aware of what is known as “having a conflict of interest”.  Since it was the United States that unilaterally decided to colonize Puerto Rico, that disqualifies her from managing the decolonization of Puerto Rico for having an interest in this matter which would prohibit her from being unbiased.  The fact that Oscar is the longest held political prisoner is the best proof of that (but certainly not the only)!

This is why, we must all work together to peacefully protest twice a year for the decolonization of Puerto Rico until we accomplish it.  Please help us plan one in Puerto Rico in March, and the other in New York City.  We have the law behind us, but now we must protest until it is enforced!  We must protest because those who practice colonialism or slavery don’t believe in justice for all.

Secretary General asked the Decolonization Committee to find the way to get it done

http://www.un.org/apps/news/story.asp?NewsID=44193&Cr=decolonization

Click on the above link to read or see the video of the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), Ban Ki-moon, addressing the Special Committee for Decolonization.  He tells the committee that it needs to find creative ways to involve everyone to decolonize the world during this third decade dedicated to doing just that.

Ban Ki-moon does not mention specifically that the committee should return Puerto Rico back on the UN’s list of colonies.  He does however say that the committee should review that list to see who should be on it or off it.

Puerto Rico was taken off the UN’s list of colonies as a result of the United States alleging that Puerto Rico had attained in 1952 self government via what has been called The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.

Later, the UN became aware that in reality Puerto Rico never ceased being a US colony despite this new name given.  Despite the fact that the UN holds hearings every June (the Monday after Fathers” Day) to discuss Puerto Rico’s decolonization, the UN has never returned Puerto Rico on its list of colonies.  Putting Puerto Rico on the list would constitute, in my opinion, being creative to get the job done, which is what the Secretary General wants the committee to do.

Another creative way is to organize everyone to peacefully protest twice a year for the decolonization of Puerto Rico.  Why?  Because it’s the law since 1960 that colonialism is a crime against humanity (UN resolution 1514 XV).  And we must, because those who practice or accept colonialism don’t believe in justice for all.

Become involved!  Like the UN says, “It’s your world.”

The United States’ government wants to keep Puerto Rico a colony

Puerto Rican Lawyer speaks at the UN Decolonisation Committee seminar — MercoPress

Click on the above link to read about what an expert on the political relationship of United States (US) and Puerto Rico (PR) says is the intent of US with PR.

This is all of us who believe that it is wrong for any nation to own another nation for the purpose of exploitation, must peacefully protest until Puerto Rican decolonization is completed.

We must all work together to plan and participate in a peaceful protest in Puerto Rico and in the United States.  We have the international law behind us.  Now we need to translate it into the will of the people.  Isn’t that what democracy is?  Or are we, at the service of our government?  When did we allow the carriage before the Horse?

The 32nd time the UN has asked the US to decolonize Puerto Rico

Special Committee on Decolonization Approves Text Calling upon United States to Initiate Self-determination Process for Puerto Rico

Click on the above link to read the United Nations’ (UN) official minutes of the Puerto Rico Decolonization Hearing held on Monday, June 17, 2013.  Again, the Special UN Committee for Decolonization issued its 32nd resolution calling on the United States of America to decolonize Puerto Rico by virtue of her legitimate right under international law.

Now that the world has the law behind it, it is time to peacefully protest at least twice a year, one in Puerto Rico and the other in New York City, until the government of the United States finally makes good on these multiple resolution it has ignored for 31 years!

The following is the flyer that we handed out in the park across the street of the United Nations during 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.  We were later invited to the Venezuela’s Mission for a celebration.

I look forward to making the New York City (NYC) protest even better with the important contacts that I was able to make with the NYC Puerto Rican Diaspora!  I particularly want to thank the tremendous help of Iris Colon, Eric Ramos Rodríguez (President of the New York’s Committee of the Puerto Rican Independence Party), Laila Román Jiménez and the 2 Puerto Rican actresses (Morales).

Compañeros Unidos para la Descolonización de Puerto Rico
Peaceful Protest at the United Nations on June 17, 2013 from 8 to 5PM.
By José M. López Sierra

We are here today to peacefully protest the United States (US) governments’ “crime against humanity” for maintaining Puerto Rico under colonial rule for over 114 years.

This July 25th will be the 115th anniversary of Puerto Rico’s illegal political relationship with the United States.  The United States government shows no genuine indication that it wants to end this illegal colonial relationship according to international law, because

·       US has ignored 31 United Nations resolutions calling on the United States to immediately decolonize Puerto Rico, and

·       US has illegally maintained incarcerated for 32 years Oscar López Rivera for fighting for Puerto Rico’s decolonization

Compañeros Unidos para la Descolonización de Puerto Rico (CUDPR) and others plan to peacefully protest twice a year until Puerto Rico becomes decolonized.  The first protest will be in Puerto Rico on the Abolition of Slavery Day on March 22nd.  The second will be during the yearly hearing to discuss Puerto Rico’s decolonization outside the United Nations in New York City.

We hope that everyone who believes in democracy will get involved in decolonizing Puerto Rico, because those who practice colonialism don’t believe in justice for all.

Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”  Abraham Lincoln said it this way.  “Those who deny the right to others don’t deserve it for themselves.”

Where are the 54% who voted in the Puerto Rico plebiscite?

Last November 6, 2012, 54% of the voters who participated in the Puerto Rico status plebiscite expressed their desire to decolonize Puerto Rico.  It is now seven months later.  So what happens now?

President Obama recently sent a bill to Congress to allocate money for yet another plebiscite.  This may look like democratic activity to the untrained eye, but in reality it is commonly called “business as usual”.  What’s up with these plebiscites?

These plebiscites are used by the government of the United States (US) to continue to keep Puerto Rico as its colony, while, at the same time, trying to appear to the world that the US really wants to stop being an empire.  This is why education is such a crucial element to the decolonization of Puerto Rico.

Decolonization is a process under the jurisdiction of international law, and is definitely never under the laws of the country that owns the colony.  Therefore, if the US really wanted to decolonize Puerto Rico, all she would have to do is request that the United Nations (UN) administer this process according to international law.  But the obvious fact of the matter is (and the only real reason why Puerto Rico’s oldest political prisoner of 32 years, Oscar Lopez Rivera, continue incarcerated despite overwhelming world opposition), she definitely doesn’t!  She rather prefers to engage Puerto Ricans in participating in political status plebiscites.  But what about the 54% of the Puerto Rican voters who do want to decolonize Puerto Rico?

We either stay quiet and validate colonialism by becoming an accessory to the crime, or engage in peaceful protests until the will of the people is respected by the government!
In 1960, the UN declared colonialism to be a crime against humanity.  Since that time, the UN has issued 31 resolutions asking for the US to immediately decolonize Puerto Rico.  The US has ignored these resolutions.  Yet, the US went to war against Iraq, because she ignored, according to President George W. Bush, too many UN resolutions.

I propose that, from now until Puerto Rico becomes decolonized, all people who believe that it is an abomination that the government of the United States continue to keep Puerto Rico as its colony to participate in two peaceful protests a year.  The first should be in Puerto Rico in front of the United States Court in Hato Rey.  The second one should be at the United Nations on the same day that it annually holds a hearing to discuss Puerto Rico’s colonial situation.

Our first peaceful protest at the UN will be this June 17, 2013 from 8 AM to 5 PM outside the visitors’ entrance on 46th Street and First Ave.  We hope to able to organize the Puerto Rico protest for the Abolition of Slavery Day with all the people and organizations interested in doing this.  This holiday is fitting because colonialism is the enslavement of a People.

In a democracy, the government is not supposed to be able to ignore the will of the majority. We need to remind the government of that.   Abraham Lincoln said that those who deny liberty to others don’t deserve it for themselves.  And, of course, we must protest because those who practice or accept colonialism don’t believe in JUSTICE FOR ALL!  We’ll be expecting you.

Atrocities committed against Puerto Rico by the United States of America

http://listverse.com/2012/10/26/8-atrocities-committed-again-puerto-rico-by-the-us/

Click on the above link to read about atrocities committed by the United States against the People of Puerto Rico.

Those of us who are outraged by these atrocities must be willing to stand up and be counted in a nonviolent protest outside the United Nations (UN) on June 17, 2013.   On that very day, the Special Committee on Decolonization of the UN will be discussing once again Puerto Rico’s colonial status with the United States.

The United States has ignored 31 UN resolutions calling on her to immediately decolonize Puerto Rico.  Not only has she not done so, but she has continued to maintain Oscar López Rivera in US custody for 32 years.  Isn’t it ironic that the country that proclaims to be the champion of human rights, liberty and democracy has the sole distinction of having the longing held political prisoner in the world?

We must work together to decolonize Puerto Rico and liberate Oscar López Rivera.  Join the nonviolent protest at 46th Street and First Avenue from 8AM to 5PM to demand the immediate decolonization of Puerto Rico!  We must, because those who practice and accept colonialism don’t believe in JUSTICE FOR ALL!

What is it like to live in the colony of Puerto Rico?

Click on the above link to hear United States House of Representative Luis Gutiérrez (Puerto Rican) speak about how Puerto Ricans’ rights are being violated by the government.   It is important to point out that the government of Puerto Rico works for the government of the United States, and not for the People of Puerto Rico.  Once you understand that, you can then understand what Luis is condemning on the floor of the US House of Representative.

This is why we need to protest peacefully outside the United Nations (UN) on June 17, 2013 on the same day that inside the UN, the Special Committee on Decolonization is discussing Puerto Rico’s colonial situation with the United States.  The fact that Oscar Lopez Rivera has been incarcerated for an unprecedented 32 years by the US for fighting for Puerto Rico decolonization is an excellent indication that the US has no intentions of ever ending Puerto Rico colonialism.

Therefore, we must work together to decolonize Puerto Rico and free Oscar Lopez Rivera.  Join the nonviolent protest outside the UN on June 17, 2013 from 8AM to 5PM on 46th Street and First Avenue.  Why?  Because, those who practice colonialism don’t believe in JUSTICE FOR ALL!
