¿Que más se puede esperar de una historia como la de Puerto Rico? / What else could you expect from a history like Puerto Rico’s?

Mientras navego por la Internet para regar la voz sobre la protesta del año que viene en la Organización de Naciones Unidas (ONU), leo muchos artículos sobre Puerto Rico (PR).   Me sorprendo mucho la magnitud de la ignorancia de los autores sobre la historia de PR por su asombro sobre de lo que nos informan.  ¡Si supieran nuestra historia, entenderían que tendría que ser así! 

Sus artículos son de sobre:

• Ahora hay un millón de puertorriqueños más que viven en Estados Unidos que en Puerto Rico
• Solo un 40% de la fuerza laboral puertorriqueña están trabajado
• PR tiene doble el crimen que la cuidad de Nueva York (NY) con solo 50% de la población  
• PR es la segunda jurisdicción de Estado Unidos (EEUU) con más policía 
• PR tiene 4 oficinas de FBI mientas que algunos estados no tiene ni una
• PR importa el 90% de su consumo  agrícola
• PR tiene índices alto en problemas de salud, salud mental, drogadicción, alcoholismo, deserción escolar
• Los puertorriqueños no se ponen de acuerdo sobre su estatus político
• etc

PR siempre ha sido una colonia.  El coloniaje es únicamente para la explotación.  Por lo tanto, la situación que vivimos hoy es el resultado de la explotación de EEUU por 114 años.  ¡Obviamente, no es un retrato bonito!

Algunos se confundan por la apariencia distorsionada del “progreso”.  Ven a los puertorriqueños en masa en los centros comerciales.  Pero, ¿a quien le están comprando?  ¿Son a empresas puertorriqueñas o estadounidense?  PR es el sexto mercado de EEUU en el mundo.  ¡Para una isla tan pequeña, eso es impresionante!  Las cadenas estadounidenses tienen más de sus tiendas en PR que en cualquier otro estado de la Unión.  ¿Y en cual estado se reclutan más soldados para el ejército de EEUU?  ¡PR!  ¿Será porque somos más patrióticos, o porque no tenemos nuestra propia economía nacional?

La razón por la cual la gente no entiende esta enorme devastación es porque no conocen la historia verdadera de PR.  ¡Y eso no es por mera casualidad!  A la medida en que el gobierno de EEUU pueda evitar que conozcamos nuestra verdadera historia para poder entender como llegamos aquí, por más tiempo nos podrá explotar.  Su plan es mantenernos en el coloniaje para siempre.  Un gobernador de PR nombrado por el presidente lo expresó de la mejor manera.  El Gobernador E. Montgomery Reilly dijo: “Mientras vuele la bandera de Estados Unidos sobre Estados Unidos, también volará sobre Porto Rico”.  ¡Más claro no canta un gallo!

¿Por qué el gobierno de PR no representa los intereses de los puertorriqueños?  No lo hace porque también recibe su recompensa por permitir que este abuso continúe.  Un ejemplo perfecto es el hecho de que el gobierno de PR no permite que se hagan documentales sobre la historia de PR.  A través de mantenernos ignorantes de nuestra propia historia, podrán evitar que podamos entender como llegamos a este caos, y que tenemos que hacer para salir de ella.  Para poder tomar decisiones,  tenemos que partir de unos hechos.  Sin ellos, todo el mundo esta libre para inventarse lo que quiera.  ¡Pero eso no es enfrentarse a nuestra realidad!  Todo el mundo tiene el derecho a su opinión, pero no a sus propios hechos.  ¡Y así es como hemos llegado hasta aquí!

Ya que sabemos que el gobierno no nos va a decir la verdad, tenemos que buscarla por nuestra cuenta.  Thomas Jefferson entendió esta amenaza a la democracia.  Al preguntársele si ahora teníamos un gobierno democrático, él contestó:   “Sí, si lo podemos conservar.”  La gente como “Occupy Wall Street” saben que la riqueza del país esta concentrado en 1% de nuestros ciudadanos.  Que más prueba necesitamos para darnos cuenta que no pudimos conservarlo. 

Por lo tanto, nos toca a nosotros hacer lo que una democracia de verdad hace.  Nosotros, los ciudadanos, tenemos que decirle al gobierno lo que queremos.  Tenemos que educarnos para tener la información correcta, y manteneros vigilante como nos advirtió Thomas Jefferson.    ¡Que lastima que tuvimos que apréndelo a la mala!

As I surf the Internet to spread the word about next year’s protest at the United Nation (UN), I get to read a lot of articles about Puerto Rico (PR).  I am amazed at the extent of ignorance about PR history, by how many of them are astounded over the magnitude of the problem in their respected articles!  If they knew our real history, they would not be shocked at all!

These articles are about:

• one million more Puerto Ricans living in the US than in PR
• only 40% of the total  workforce employed in PR
• more than twice the crime in PR than in New York City, despite having half the population
• PR is the second US jurisdiction with the biggest police force
• PR has 4 FBI offices, while other states may not have even one
• PR imports 90% of her agricultural consumption
• PR has high statistics in problems regarding health, mental health, drugs and alcohol, school drop-out, etc…
• Puerto Rican can’t decide what status to choose
• Etc…

PR has been a colony forever?  Colonialism is for the only purpose of exploitation.  So what we have today in PR is the effects of 114 years of United States (US) exploitation.  Obviously, it’s not a pretty picture!

Some are fooled by the distorted appearance of prosperity.  You see large numbers of Puerto Ricans in the shopping malls.  But, from whom do we buy?  Are they PR or US owned commercial industries?   PR is the US’s 6^th world consumer.  For an island this size, that is quite impressive!  US national commercial chains have more of their stores in PR than in any other state of the Union.  And which state has the highest military recruitment rate than any other?  PR does!  Is that because Puerto Ricans are more patriotic than the rest, or is it that PR has no economy of her own?  

The main reason why people don’t understand PR’s massive devastation is because they don’t know our real history.   And that is not shear coincidence!  As long as the US government can prevent people from getting all of the pieces of knowledge to understand why we are here, the longer it can continue to exploit PR.  The plan is to keep PR a colony forever.  The former PR governor appointed by a US president said it best.  Governor E. Montgomery Reilly said, “As long as Old Glory waves over the United States, it will wave too over Porto Rico.”  What could be clearer than that!

Why doesn’t the PR government represent the interest of Puerto Ricans?  They don’t because they get a piece of the action for going along with the colonial relationship.  One perfect example is that the PR government will not allow documentaries made about the real history of PR.  By keeping the collective memory of the Puerto Ricans from the Puerto Ricans, you make it difficult for them to agree on their own future as a people.  To make decisions, you need a set of facts to base them on.  Without them, everybody is free to make up their own “facts”.  But that’s not facing our reality.  Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not to his own facts.  And that is what has bought us here.

Since we know that the government will not give us the real facts, we will have to get them ourselves.  Thomas Jefferson knew about the fact that this threat to democracy was always present.  When asked if we now had a democracy, he responded, “Yes, if we can keep it.”  People like the Occupy Wall Street have already realized that the wealth in the US is concentrated in only 1% of its citizens.  What more proof do we need to understand that we did not keep it! 

So it is up to us to do what a real democracy does.  We the people have to tell our government what we want.  We must educate ourselves to insure that we have accurate information, and always stay vigilant like Thomas Jefferson warned us.  Too bad we had to learn it the hard way!
