Who’s responsible for Puerto Rico’s colonial status?

The United States wanted to acquire lands for her Caribbean Manifest Destiny.  She decided to declare war on Spain, since Spain had colonized them after her discovery of the new world.

We all know that the United States (US) claims to represent freedom and equality among all people.  But, aside from this rhetoric, what has she done?  Has the US been any different than all the nations that have come before her?

Instead of giving Puerto Rico (PR) her freedom after 405 years of Spanish colonialism at the end of the Spanish American War, which would have been what everyone would have expected, the US decided to make PR her colony.

The US has exploited PR for 114 years in the very same way that all empires have.  The only difference has been that the US has done so in the most covert manner, so as to get away with it for as long as possible.  The fact of the matter is that the present relationship has benefitted exclusively the US to the point of massive devastation to PR (see other blogs for specifics).

After World War II, and the establishment of the United Nations, the world wanted to avoid another world war.  The United Nations’goal was to create and maintain world peace by recognizing that all people had a right to self-determination and independence.

Again, instead of the US allowing PR to decide without any interference what she wanted, the US engaged in defrauding the world.  The US fabricated what she called the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico in 1952.  The US alleged that this gave PR self government.  This, of course, was the same colony with a new pretty name. The premeditated intent to deceive the world can be seen in the date in which the US decided to put into effect this “new self-government”.  The US chose the same date of her invasion of PR (July 25).  The FBI assassinated Filiberto Ojeda Ríos on the anniversary of “El Grito de Lares”.  Do you think that is a coincidence?

In 1953, the US asked the UN to remove PR from its list of colonies, because PR had achieved self-government in 1952.  The US ambassador at the time, Henry Cabot
Lodge said to the general assembly, “I am authorized to say on behalf of the President that if, at any time, the Legislative Assembly of Puerto Rico adopts a resolution in favor of more or even complete independence, he will immediately recommend to Congress that such independence be granted.”  History has proven this to have been a lie too!  Would we be here after 114 years of US colonialism talking about decolonizing the oldest colony in the world had that been the truth?

So here we are in 2012 with 30 unanimous UN resolutions calling for PR decolonization.  What does the US say?

The US says that UN Resolution 748 (VIII) of 1953 makes PR political status a domestic issue.  Thus, the US claims, this matter is outside the purview of the UN.

Why would the nation that proclaims to be the champion of democracy stonewall the decolonization of PR?  If the US spends so much money in federal aid to the island (as some would like us to believe), why doesn’t she decolonize and avoid the bad press from these UN resolutions?  It’s obvious that it is because, like in every colonial relationship, the US wants to continue the exploitation for as long as she could get away with it.  So what are we to do?

It is incumbent on all people who believe that people have a right to self-determination and independence to pressure all countries that possess colonies to decolonize now!  The pressure must be great!  It will undoubtedly require changes in the UN structure so that these administrating Powers no longer have veto power over the rest of the other UN members.  That is exactly what democracy is all about.  It’s about people being in control of their government, and not the other way around.  And when the opposite happens, that’s when world peace is threatened!  Isn’t that what the UN is supposed to be trying to avoid?
