What is wrong with Puerto Rico’ status plebiscite?

Nosotros no conocemos nuestra historia a propósito.

Puerto Rico celebrated a plebiscite last November 6, 2012 to determine whether we wanted to:
·         Continue to be a colony of the United States (US)
·         Become a state of the Union
·         Become a sovereign free associated state with the US
·         Or to become an independent nation.

The majority voted against continuing to be a colony, and favored becoming the 51st State of the Union.  So what is wrong with that?  Plenty!

A colony can’t have valid elections.  By definition, a colony is controlled by another country, and therefore a voter can not make a decision that is free from the manipulation of the empire.

The process of decolonization can not be under the control of the empire.  In order to exercise self-determination, the colony must cease to be a colony first.  This is why decolonization is under the jurisdiction of international law.  After all, the colony became a colony because the empire wanted it that way!  PR can not go from being a colony of the US to being the 51st State of the US.  PR would have to be an independent nation first, before she could decide to integrate into the US.

Half a million voters did not express a preference to which political status they wanted.  Why did that happen?

Over 4 million Puerto Ricans living off the island were not considered in this paramount discussion.  Most of them were forced to emigrate from PR dues to the economic hardship produced by the US’ exploitation.  They regret having to do that!  Why do you think we all cry when we hear, “En Mi Viejo San Juan”?  Pedro Albizu Campos warned us about the US’ interest in the cage, and not the birds.  By getting rid of us, and repopulating the cage with her birds, then she would have the cage with the kind of birds that would guarantee statehood for PR.

The US has repressed the independence of PR during these 114 years.  Do you believe that that might have had an effect on why statehood got the majority of the votes?  The Ponce Massacre, the Cerro Maravilla assassinations, the Feliberto Ojeda Rios Assassination, the FBI’s Counter Intelligence Operation (COINTELPRO), to name a few, were aimed at discouraging independence for PR.  It is a joke to hear US politicians says that the US is willing to give PR whatever political status she wants.  For the many Puerto Ricans who don’t know their history, they naively believe them!

We are a divided about status, because the US has wanted it that way.  That is the result of the repression.  It is also the result Puerto Ricans not knowing our history.  We only know some distorted propaganda that the US wants us to know in order to keep us under her control.

If the US really wants to decolonize PR, all she has to do is ask the United Nations (UN) to manage the process.  But, she doesn’t do that.  She prefers to violate international by continuing to have colonies, and hold these charades to continue to deceive the world that she is about respecting the rule of law.

This is why the UN protest this June 17, 2013 is so important!  One thing is undisputable.  Any nation that has colonies does not believe in justice for all!
