All things are possible, if you only believe.

All things are possible, if you only believe.

I received a letter yesterday from Oscar López Rivera.  He’s been in prison for 31 years for fighting for the decolonization of Puerto Rico.

I am amazed how positive and hopeful he is after being in prison for so long.  It is obvious that he believes that he has done what his conscious dictated.  He has no regrets, and is convinced, like I am that Puerto Rico will soon be colonized!

He said that his mother never allowed any of her children to say that something was impossible to achieve.  She taught her children that if they really wanted something, they could find the way to get it (like the hymn, “All things are possible, if you only believe”).  The worst thing that they could do was to “not try at all”!  That was never an option!

I believe that Puerto Rico has not been decolonized yet, because too many people believe it is impossible.  Furthermore, there are others who believe that decolonization only can occur one way.  So they keep trying it that way, over and over again, without ever questioning whether the process it is purposely designed to keep Puerto Rico a colony forever.  But for that, you have to be able to think outside the box!  And that is one of the tragedies of colonialism.  We think the way we have been programmed to.  That’s why we don’t see the obvious!

I invite you to be as positive as Oscar.  Forget about elections in a colony.  If you think about it, it is lunacy!  Instead, let’s attend the June 2012 United Nations hearing on Puerto Rico Decolonization and demand it happens now!

After the huge sacrifice that Oscar and others have done, it is the least (those of us who want Puerto Rico decolonized) that we could do!  It is about everyone giving a part of what they have, so that a few don’t have to give all of what they have.

We look forward to meeting you!

Here is Oscar’s letter in the above blog (Spanish version).  Clicking on it will make it bigger.
