¡Una protesta para exigir la descolonización de Puerto Rico! / A protest to demand Puerto Rico decolonization!

Después de haber hablado ante el Comité de Descolonización de la Organización de Naciones Unidas (ONU) para expresar mis ideas sobre el caso de Puerto Rico (PR), he decidido no volver hacerlo el año que viene.  Estas vistas se han celebrado por muchos años.  Nuestro enfoque es realizar la descolonización de PR de verdad, y no involucrarnos en actividades que meramente hablan sobre nuestro problema.  Si PR se hubiera podido descolonizar a través de las 30 resoluciones de la ONU, ya se hubiese logrado.  Pero ya a esta altura, debe ser obvio para todo el mundo que necesitamos hacer algo más que nos acerque a nuestra meta.

Creo que el próximo paso a seguir debe ser una protesta masiva el año que viene en las afueras de la ONU mientra se celebra la vista sobre al caso de PR.  Esta protesta se podría llamar, ¡Construyendo la paz mundial eliminando la injusticia mundial”  

Tenemos la ley a nuestro lado desde el 1960 cuando la ONU proclamó el coloniaje un crimen en contra de la humanidad.  Necesitamos exigirle a EEUU que obedezca la ley internacional.  Las grandes naciones dan ejemplo con sus actuaciones.  El coloniaje, al igual que la esclavitud, está a lo opuesto de la democracia.  ¡Por lo tanto, es imperativo que toda persona que quiera que se descolonice a PR, ayude a ponerle presión a EEUU para que lo haga ahora!  Es importante que sepamos, sin embargo, que esto será muy difícil lograrlo.

EEUU le saca entre 10 a 15 dólares por cada dólar que invierte en PR.  Por eso, y por otras razones mas, EEUU no la quiere soltar.  Para mantenerla aguantada, EEUU ha hecho leyes para convertir la lucha por la independencia de PR un crimen doméstico.  PR es el único lugar del mundo donde es un crimen luchar para la independencia de su país.  Por eso es que EEUU ha mantenido al compañero y prisionero político Oscar López Rivera  por 31 años en prisión.  ¡Oscar es el prisionero político que más años ha pasado en la cárcel en todo el mundo! Nelson Mandela cumplió 27 años.  La actitud del gobierno de EEUU es ¡Hago lo que quiero porque tengo el poder para hacerlo!

Pero la verdad del caso es que el propio gobierno de EEUU es el que esta violado la ley por mantener a Oscar en prisión y mantener a PR bajo su dominio colonial.  El coloniaje no esta bajo la jurisdicción de ningún país.  El colonialismo esta bajo la jurisdicción de la ley internacional.  ¡Por lo tanto, es EEUU y no Oscar que ha cometido un crimen!

Por eso es que para poder lograr nuestra meta, tenemos que fabricar una gran demostración de indignación doméstica e internacional.    Necesitaríamos protestar por la decisión arrogante de EEUU de violar la ley internacional.  A menudo escuchamos al Congreso decir que hay que “nivelar el campo del juego”.  Pero en nuestro caso siempre han mantenido el campo del juego grandemente inclinado para EEUU.  ¿Donde perdimos los ideales del derecho, la igualdad y la justicia para todos?  EEUU tiene que actuar en conformidad con lo mismo que le dice el mundo.  Por eso es que EEUU ha perdido mucha credibilidad en su mismo país, al igual que internacionalmente.  Nosotros, la gente común, tenemos que recobrar las riendas del país para que se pueda gobernar según los deseos de la mayoría del pueblo.   

En preparación para esta protesta, habrá que empezar desde ahora a coordinarlo.  Habremos que contactar a:

• Las organizaciones que hablaron en la vista de PR en la ONU para solicitarle que se unan
• La ONU para que sepa que la protesta ocurrirá simultáneamente con la vista del 2013 sobre PR
• La Policía de Nueva York para obtener el permiso
• Los medios de comunicación para que cubra el evento
• Personas conocidas que se solidarizan con nuestra causa
• etc., etc., etc.,

Obviamente, tendremos que tener mucha ayuda entre todos nosotros que luchamos por la descolonización de PR para que sea el éxito necesario para lograrlo.  Por favor únete a esta protesta.  No es suficiente solo estar a favor de lo que es justo.  Lo que asegurara que lo justo se logre depende en lo que hagamos juntos.  Por favor déjame saber si podemos contar contigo en esta protesta tipo “párate para ser contado”.   Una petición es  fácil botar a la basura para alguien que no quiera hacer lo que se le pide.  Pero una multitud de personas es mucho más difícil barrer debajo de una alfombra. 

Una cosa es cierto, si seguimos haciendo los mismo, seguiremos recibiendo los mismo abusos que hemos recibido en el pasado.  Pero no tiene que ser así.  ¿Qué dices?

After speaking at the Puerto Rico (PR) decolonization hearing at the United Nation (UN) this year to express to the Committee my views concerning PR, I have decided not to do it again next year.  These hearings have been going on for a long time.  Our main concern is to truly decolonize PR, and not just get involved to merely discuss it to death.  If PR would have gotten decolonize by 30 UN resolutions asking the United States (US) to assume her responsibility to decolonize her, it would have happened already.  But at this juncture, it should be obvious to everyone that we need to do something else to move our cause in the right direction.

I believe that the next step should be a massive protest outside the UN next year demanding the decolonization of PR simultaneously to the PR hearing.  This protest could be called, “Build world peace by eliminating the injustice in the world”

We have the law on our side since 1960, when the UN proclaimed colonialism a crime against humanity.  We need to demand that the United States government obey international law!  Great nations lead by example.  Colonialism, like slavery runs contrary to democracy.  Therefore, it is imperative that all those who want decolonization to happen must help pressure the United States government to do so now!  Be aware however, that it will indeed be difficult!

The US gets from 10 to 15 dollars for every dollar she invests in PR.  This, among many other reasons, is why the US does not want to let PR go.  To hold on to her, the US has made laws to make it a crime to fight for the independence of PR.  PR is the only place in the world where it is a domestic crime to struggle for independence.  That’s why the US has incarcerated Oscar López Rivera for 31 years, and refuses to free him despite the massive domestic and international support to do so!  Nelson Mandela served 27 years in prison.  The US government’s attitude is I do what I want, because I have the power to do so! 

But the fact of the matter is that it is the US that is breaking the law for incarcerating Oscar and holding PR under colonial rule!  You see, colonialism is not within any country’s jurisdiction.  It is under the jurisdiction of international law.  Therefore, it is the US, and not Oscar that has committed a crime!

For this reason, in order to decolonize PR, we will need to manufacture a huge national and international outcry of outrage!  We would need to protest the US’ arrogant decision to refuse to obey by the rule of law.  Often you will hear the US Congress talk about “leveling the playing field”.  But in our case, it has done everything in its power to keep the playing field lopsided to its favor!  Where did we lose our country’s ideals of right, liberty and justice for all!  The US has to walk the talk.  This is why she has lost a lot of credibility at home and abroad.  We the people need to take back the control of the direction our country to ensure that it is responsive to the majority’s will!

In preparation for this protest, we would need to begin now to get everybody ready.  We will need to contact:

• The organizations that spoke at the PR  hearing in 2012
• The UN so it will know that the protest will be happening simultaneously to the PR hearing
• New York Police Department for the permit
• News media for coverage
• Known personality with solidarity to this cause
• Etc, etc, etc…

So obviously, we will need a lot of cooperation from everybody who is in solidarity with PR decolonization.  Please join us in this protest!  It’s not enough to be in favor of what is right.  What will make justice happen depends on what we do together! Please let me know if we can count on you to be there next June 2013 in a “stand up and be counted protest”.  A petition is easy to throw in the garbage for someone who doesn’t want to do what the petition is asking for.  But a massive crowd is difficult to sweep under the rug.

One thing is for sure.   If we continue to do what we have always done, we will continue to be condemned to the same abuse that we have gotten.  But it doesn’t have to be that way!  What do you say?
