¿Por qué celebrar la Constitución del Estado Libre Asociado? / Why should we celebrate the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico?

On July 25, some Puerto Ricans will be celebrating the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. How could a colony have a constitution?  Those of us who know our real history know, on the contrary, Puerto Ricans have nothing to celebrate about!

Reading the Puerto Rico (PR) government’s orientation would make you believe that Puerto Ricans would have plenty to celebrate.  It contains half truths with the intent to portray a grand accomplishment when, in fact, it has been a disaster.

For example, it states the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico is based on the people having the power.  When the Puerto Ricans drafted our Constitution, the United States government made us change certain things we wanted included.  The PR government is obviously purposely deceiving us!  On the other hand, by reading our blog, or by doing our own research about the real condition of PR, we would be quickly be convinced that our situation could not be worse!

The October 30, 1950 nationalist insurrection was in response to this “constitution” lie that was being developed to fool the world that PR would no longer be a colony.  The attack on the US House of Representative in 1954 was also in response to the US’ claim at the UN in 1953 that PR was no longer a US colony.

According to the United Nations’ (UN), there are 3.9 million Puerto Ricans living in Puerto Rico, and 4.3 million living in the United States.  If the Commonwealth has been so good for PR, why have so many of us left?

There are no opportunities in PR.  A worker in PR earns 33% of what he/she could earn in the US, or 50% of a Mississippi worker (the poorest state of the Union).  This is why the biggest Puerto Rico exodus is our college graduates (the brain drain).  Should we be celebrating this?

With no jobs, we get high crime on the island.  Puerto Rico’s crime is higher than in New York City (with double our population)!  Should we be celebrating that?

60 % of Puerto Ricans depend on government help in order to survive.  We have a high percentage of drug abuse, alcoholism, school drop out, mental illnesses, domestic violence, and the list goes on too much longer!  Certainly, we can’t be celebrating that!  Yet, some of us will!  They are the accomplices of our 60 year old lie.

Before you decide to celebrate (no one likes to be left out), take some time to find out if July 25, 1952 should be celebrated.  You probably will discover that on that same day in 1898, Puerto Rico was militarily invaded by the US.  PR has been a US colony ever since.  The Constitution of Puerto Rico didn’t change one bit our colonial relationship.  Is it a coincidence that these two historic events share the same anniversary?  One thing is for sure, the more you learn about your past, the better you are able be to make a better decision about your future.

Lastly, did you know that Puerto Rico is the only place in the world where it is against the law to fight for the decolonization of one’s own country?  July 25th is also the anniversary of the political execution of 2 young “independentistas” at the hand of the Puerto Rico Police at Cerro Maravilla.

Don’t let others think for you.  Instead of being part of the problem, join the protest in June 2013 at the UN!
